Commercial Description:
This seasonal porter is a brown so deep that it's almost black. The taste of our "plain" evolves as it warms in the glass; shading from dry chocolate and coffee to chocolate and cobnut. The finish is dry and nutty with just the slightest hint of licorice. Black Irish is brewed from pale ale, crystal, brown and chocolate malts; with roast barley in the mash for the dry astringency characteristic of Irish porters and stouts. Delightful on its own, it makes a wonderful match with smoked salmon, mussels or oysters.

[542-20070818] Sample @ BeerBistro (Golden Taps, Toronto, ON). Lightly smoky and meaty aroma is mostly nutty coffee malt. Dark brown black body with a quick light tan head. Dark coffee roasted malt continues in flavour with some chocolate notes. Full body. A solid porter, if plain.

Enjoyed this one at Volo many times. A nice dark black, with a roasty malt taste, and good balance of bitterness. Body is fairly light and goes down surprising easy.

On tap 2006 version: Tapped as nearly perfect as I have ever seen: a deep dark black with ruby highlights at the stem of the glass...tight, sticky mocha colored meringue cap lasts a while and paints the glass with lace. Aroma is as close to heaven as possible without making the ultimate sacrifice: rich aroma of decadent bitter cocoa and coffee rides over a grassy carrier. Medium-light body, sturdy patent malt spine, silken mouth feel, satisfying roasty-java character. Starts with a massive chew of roasted malt that instantly bursts into a dark chocolate and coffee detonation, mid way you get a more complex mix of dark dried fruit and wet hay dancing with the cocoa-java tastes....finishes long with the increased bittering of hop and burnt grain husk astringency in awsome balance with the roasted malt. Near perfect balance where the natural astringency of this London styled porter is kept in check. Quite possibly my favorite porter, certainly fresher tasting than the fuller’s I get.

Draught at TFOB. Has all the elements of a good porter; dark colour and tastes of chocolate, coffee and toffee.

Draught. Deep black with a tan head. The aroma has rich chocolate, leafy hops, and toffee. Quite bitter and unrefined flavour. I found the body to be lacking a bit in malt as I would have generally preferred heavier, stickier roast but instead it’s a bit thin. Bitter cocoa contributes to the overall bitter profile. I’d like to give this one another go at some point.

Draught @ TFOB: A beer just like a good woman: cold, black, and bitter. Pours black as Wilma Flintstone’s frying pan eyes with a dark, dark creamy head. Aroma of all things porter: chocolate, coffee, toffee, licorice. Great flavour of roasted espresso beans and chocolate, exceedingly dry, with a touch of hops. Very well done.
