Commercial Description:
This seasonal porter is a brown so deep that it's almost black. The taste of our "plain" evolves as it warms in the glass; shading from dry chocolate and coffee to chocolate and cobnut. The finish is dry and nutty with just the slightest hint of licorice. Black Irish is brewed from pale ale, crystal, brown and chocolate malts; with roast barley in the mash for the dry astringency characteristic of Irish porters and stouts. Delightful on its own, it makes a wonderful match with smoked salmon, mussels or oysters.

Bottle from Secret Festivus. Poured near black with a short cap of deep, creamy beige head. The aroma was on the sweet side with lightly-roasted chocolate and a sweet, unidentifiable (almost fruity) presence.. after that came molasses and hints of pretzel.. bizarre. The flavor had moderately-roasted black patent and molasses notes with some sharp odd stuff around the edges.. molasses, licorice, dark chocolate, and the mystery odd stuff carry through the finish.. salty. Medium-ish bodied with moderate carbonation.. the flavors did not mesh well, and the finish was rather ugly. I did not care for this.

Dark brown color, with a tan-colored head, but falling quickly, sweet roasted malt nose, with a cocoa powder note, some black coffee, dark bitter chocolate accents, hint of raisiny fruitiness in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied plate with a roasted malt character, with a good roasty coffee bean bitterness accent, a bit watery, with some black chocolatey flavors, leading towards a toasty, roasty, dry bitterness finish.

341 ml stubby bottle courtesy jerc. Translucent very dark ruby colour with a mostly diminishing creamy and fizzy beige head. Big milk chocolate and cappuccino aroma with acidic, vinous, and lightly roasty notes. Acidic, fruity, and lightly vinous flavours with a roasty and acidic finish. Light to medium bodied, smooth and soft mouthfeel. Nice stuff.

Bottle thanks to my festivus master: Pours black with a tan head. Aroma, butter, coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits. Flavor, fruity notes, chocolate, and an earthy/roasty bitterness on the finish.

A deep and dark rich brew. Tastes of smoke, almonds, coffee, yet maintains a thin mouthfeel - it resists the temptation to become too chewy or thick. Very black in appearance with a cool stubby bottle, palate is plesant.

Grainy, biscuity chocolate cocoa in the nose. Clear deep brown body is almost black. Low tan, fine bubbled head recedes fairly quickly to a slight ring. Raisins, light roasted malt flavour. Very dry with medium body and low carbonation. Bottle (LCBO at Summerhill, Nov-07) sampled with Beershine and Oakes.

Not much on this one. Left a bad bitter taste in my mouth. Color and aroma was good but I just couldn’t do the aftertaste.
