Commercial Description:
This seasonal porter is a brown so deep that it's almost black. The taste of our "plain" evolves as it warms in the glass; shading from dry chocolate and coffee to chocolate and cobnut. The finish is dry and nutty with just the slightest hint of licorice. Black Irish is brewed from pale ale, crystal, brown and chocolate malts; with roast barley in the mash for the dry astringency characteristic of Irish porters and stouts. Delightful on its own, it makes a wonderful match with smoked salmon, mussels or oysters.

Black coloured. Unfortunate big apple aroma, medium body, somewhat creamy, roasty. Slightly acidic finish. Probably not in best shape when I sampled it.

3 year old vintage: This is much more vinous, and less roasty. This not only gives it one of the defining elements of a porter, but reduces one that probably was too much to begin with. The end result - wonderfully complex and balanced porter. One of the few bright lights at the Toronto Festival of Beer 2003. This would score around 4.1. Do it again, Perry.

Black w/light brown head; lightish body, but luscious chocolate flavours; slight roasted astringency. In fact, this isn't really a porter at all, but a stout. The presence of roasted barley, the black colour and astringent bite at the end are all hallmarks of a Stout, not a porter.

(341ml bottle, thanks CaptainCougar) Giant tan head atop black body with brown edges. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee, some milk chocolate, faint anise. Taste is moderately sweet, chococoffee, roast, light earthy. Medium body, light stickiness.

Bottle courtesy of Sammy sampled on 7/26/09: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a large airy clumpy-lacing dark tan head. Aroma of lightly smoky black malt with a touch of toasty character and a hint of dark chocolate. Starts with some effervescent carbonation and sticky roasty dark malt before a drier bitter finish. A pretty decent smoky porter.

Bottle courtesy of boutip. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Smells of chocolate, raisins, and caramel. Tastes of chocolate, some underlying tartness and some fruit. This has a surprisingly full mouthfeel and a lot of rich malty undertones. Finishes lightly tarte and roasty.

This witch's cauldron is brimmed over with gorgeous coffee beans, which the dry woody ladle stirs with vivifying force...Vinous healthfulness boils and wicked ashes surface late...The abundant grass of the surrounding hill howls its intrinsic perfume to the salivating full moon...Thanks pondoshuffles!!...

Quick review of an 11oz stubby bottle from the CheeseMan! Pours dark and oily with a motor oil consistency, lower carbonation than most, but suitable on the palate, as it’s slick and oily with a decent amount of roast and smoke (burning tire rubber?), and an almost peaty note. A good porter. I can really see this one working well with oysters, much like cask stout and porter, with than smooth, low carbonation texture.

Superb black beer with a milk chocolate aroma, creamy moka head. Tame chocolate in the mouth with nice hops to balance the whole. A bit thin for my taste but enjoyable...un gros merci a Perry! »(Dec. 2003) 8-4-7-3-14
Deep dark porter with a thick moka head. In aroma, light bitter chocolate wiht herbal notes. In mouth, a crisp bitter chocolate powder, with herbal notes, like wild weeds, a bit off, but overall good. Medium bodied. Pint at the Cottage, June 30th, 2006. 7-4-7-3-13
