dhurtubise (569), Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Nov 6, 2003 Scotch Irish Black Irish Porter is fantastic robust porter. It is a deep impenetrable black. Even the edges of this beer consume any available light like a black hole. It has a thin amber-light brown cream head that embrace the edges of the pint glass. Your first mouthfull of this beer tells the whole story. It is so incredibly chocolaty you might think a swiss chocolateer had provided the MB with some secret incredients. It is also lined with a light roasted complexity that finishes this beer nicely. Although the hops are not the predominating force in this Scotch Irish product, they are not timid and do provide another element of complexity. It always amazes me when a brewer can make a beer so complex with such low alcohol. At the moment, this is the best porter available in Ontario and it blows the doors off of any standard alcohol stout we have also for compexity. mrkimchee (1414), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 16, 2003 3yr aged millenium edition. black with tan head. big cocoa and vinous nose. amazingly smooth mouthfeel fills every part of my mouth with flavour. complex flavours of sweet and dark chocolate, caramel, anise, hints of coffee and nuts. finishes sweet and mildly roasty. a very rounded and balanced beer. I'd love to see this bottled. well done perry! GregClow (2369), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 10, 2003 Rating is based on a 2000 vintage sampled at the 2003 Toronto Festival of Beer. Colour is black with a small tan head. Complex aroma of caramel, coffee, chocolate, and some woody notes. Flavour is equally complex, with the expected coffee and chocolate notes matched with some smoky and fruity elements, and a well-balanced bitterness in the finish. Another hit from Mr. Mason. MrManning (1458), London, Ontario, Canada Apr 6, 2004 On tap at the Winking Judge in Hamilton, Ontario. Hints of espresso in the aroma as well as cocoa and believe it or not, I can smell some sort of meat. Also I can detect a sort of malty aroma that is very nice. Dark body with thin caramel head that disappears fast. taste is sweet and sour witha hint of chocolate. Thie porter is bitter beginning to end, with a nice bite in the throat. Overall an amazing porter. Perry, you da man! pootzboy (900), Calgary/ Kitchener, Alberta, Canada Oct 4, 2006 On tap 2006 version:
Tapped as nearly perfect as I have ever seen: a deep dark black with ruby highlights at the stem of the glass...tight, sticky mocha colored meringue cap lasts a while and paints the glass with lace.
Aroma is as close to heaven as possible without making the ultimate sacrifice: rich aroma of decadent bitter cocoa and coffee rides over a grassy carrier.
Medium-light body, sturdy patent malt spine, silken mouth feel, satisfying roasty-java character.
Starts with a massive chew of roasted malt that instantly bursts into a dark chocolate and coffee detonation, mid way you get a more complex mix of dark dried fruit and wet hay dancing with the cocoa-java tastes....finishes long with the increased bittering of hop and burnt grain husk astringency in awsome balance with the roasted malt.
Near perfect balance where the natural astringency of this London styled porter is kept in check.
Quite possibly my favorite porter, certainly fresher tasting than the fuller’s I get.
