Commercial Description:
This seasonal porter is a brown so deep that it's almost black. The taste of our "plain" evolves as it warms in the glass; shading from dry chocolate and coffee to chocolate and cobnut. The finish is dry and nutty with just the slightest hint of licorice. Black Irish is brewed from pale ale, crystal, brown and chocolate malts; with roast barley in the mash for the dry astringency characteristic of Irish porters and stouts. Delightful on its own, it makes a wonderful match with smoked salmon, mussels or oysters.

Thanks to radiomgb for the bottle. Pours deep black with nice tan head and lacing. Dark chocolate, nutty malt, some roastiness, and a hint of licorice. Quite a good porter, mouthfeel was a tad bit thin.

341 mL stubby. Deep, dark mahogany brown; almost black. Small brown head that fades to a film within minutes. Aroma is roast, bittersweet chocolate, burnt toast. Flavour is not as full (or as sweet) as expected from the aroma, but is solid nonetheless: cocoa, coffee grounds, walnuts, and some roasted malt bitterness. Body is actually a little thin. Nice winter session beer. Would love to try this on tap.

341 mL bottle. Pours a dark black with thin head. Aroma is a bit smoky. Flavour is rich malt with a bit of a buttery-sweet finish - bit of the smokiness remains throughout. Quite nice

Original rating, 10/13/2007. Pours black. Black head. Aroma contains malt vinegar and roasted malts, with shades of chocolate and coffee. Some yeast. The flavour contains bitter, almost metallic-inflected malts, with lots of burnt toast, some chocolate and coffee. However, the body is on the light side. Quite good, was pleasantly surprised considering the relatively cheap price.

Rerate, 4/6/2008. On tap at Castle on King. Pours nearly opaque black with a small, creamy, tan head. Aroma of chocolate, toast, dirt, rain, black licorice and coffee beans. Flacour of burnt toast and dark chocolate. A strong, raw tartness accompanies the beer. Dry earth aftertaste. Light bodied, but manages to be rich and complex.

A pretty darn good beer. A friend brought this home from Waterloo for me. Pour is deep brown black with a thin disappearing head. Aroam is nutty, coffee and malts. Taste is malty with hints of chocolate and coffee, but not too much. Almost flat. A very likable beer.

The best smelling porter I’ve smelled in a long time. Chocolate aroma. Subdued coffee flavours. Really nice, medium body that’s perfectly suited to the flavour and style. This brewery has a problem with metallic aftertastes though, really annoying since they’ve got some pretty good brews. A beer I would pick up any day of the week and dddrink with dinner or just socially. Would session on tap like crazy at 4.5%, but alas, have not found on tap.

Bottle courtesy of dsnowden. Dark, dark brown body with ruby highlights, very small tan head. Nose of espresso beans, coffee, cocoa powder and dark fruits. On the fore we have heavy roast, coffee notes and dark fruits. Low carbonation, medium bodied. Nicely rounded mouthfeel. Roasty finish, medium length. Very good, but I can’t help but think it suffered a bit in my mind following the Chocolate Thunder.

Pours a tar black with a beige head that disolves to a thin film. Aroma is a tad thin, might get stronger as the beer warms, most notable is the malty sweet scents and some strong coffee and black chocolate. Flavours of Coffee, with some tasty licorice flavours in the finish. A good mouthfeel is what this beer lacks however, It should really be thicker, feels to watery and prevents me from fully enjoying this beer. Still pretty good though, the finish is pretty decent.
