COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2003 Certainly the best beer to come out of Ontario. Even better than their Sgt. Major's, this aggresively hopped American Brown Ale is wonderfully balanced by a rich malt character. Dark mahogany in colour, a malty nose gives way to hop character. Although higher in IBU's than the Sgt. Major's, the Corporal's balance actually leaves the palate slightly sweet before succumbing to the the hops. A truly outstanding beer that gives credit to the brewer with each pint.

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2011 Perry’s the best brewer in Canada. This is a fine example of his craft though sometimes inconsistent in quality when this beer is on it is ON! Not much more to add than what’s already been said. I’m a fan. Re-rate 29/01/10 Since this was an early rate I thought it was worth re-examining. Here’s the deal, this beer was once the handmade pride of a very small scale brewer, Perry Mason, who got bought out by a bigger micro. This beer is either not as good as it once was or my palate has developed. But essentially this beer, while still good, is not as mind blowing as I remember. The taste is thinner but still potent. There’s a real woodiness in the finish and it’s still likeably bitter. But it’s just not a powerhouse. I’d likely re-rate it about a 3.5.

Nutty, chocolate aroma, deep copper, lovely little vanilla head, some lace. Nutty, woody and chocolate malt flavours are an absolute marriage! The after taste is a sensational malt, with just the right amount of bitterness. Wonderfully balanced. Terrific!

Wow, what a great beer this is! Great toasted brown colour, nice combination of rostiness and bitterness in the aroma. The body is robust and creamy without being overbearing. The flavour perfectly combines the toasty chocolate nuttiness of a great porter with the dry, woody hops of a great pale ale. If this is Perry's idea of punishment, I can't even begin to imagine his idea of pleasure!

UPDATED: APR 12, 2009 Pint from a Cask at the Castle. Man, is this a solid brew! Taps a murky amberish brown, with a large, frothy, beige head. Aroma: Strong aromatic hops, quite nice, with a very solid malty backbone. Taste: Unbelievably well balanced. You can tell there’s 84 IBU’s, but honestly, you don’t feel it as much as you’d think. My palate was taken away with the delicious malts, the bitterness mostly only evident in the finish and aftertaste, in the form of a mild tingling on the tongue that lingers. Man, this one is something special! Almost like a murky brown IPA, because usually Brown Ales aren’t really my thing. This beer definitely blurs the style guidelines of at least a couple different styles.

Rich amber/brown w/ fluffy tan head. Firm nose w/ lots of hops & malt(nuts, caramel, chocolate). Full-bodied. Lovely nutty, chocolately malt character slowly giving way to a somewhat earthy, very bitter finish. Extremely well balanced & surprisingly not overpowering for such a bitter beer.

This is one of the more intresting beers to hit the Ontario market. It has a mohagony colour with a tan head. The aroma is nutty and bready. Flavour is a complex nutty character, so beautifully nutty and malty. It has a very dry finish with a lingering bitterness that does not overwhelm but is arresting none the less. Mouthfeel is perfect. This beer is a total winner at 5.3 ABV and 83 IBUs. For those numbers, the beer is wonderfully balanced. Style is American Brown Ale.

341ml stubby bottle, 4.3% a/v I. Love. Stubbies. Friggin gorgeous beer, dark mahogony with a lovely tan head that laces well. Aroma is very complex, coffee, caramel, chocolate, wood, leather and herbs all in one.. very interesting. The taste is amazing, coffee, wood, flowery hops, and some nice caramel malt to back it all. Wow. The mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy, almost like a nitrogen tap. This beer is VERY VERY GOOD!

Found some old tasting notes from when i had this on tap at the beer bistro WAY back in 2005. Aroma is very hoppy, and also malty, its like an intoxicating caramel, and citrus. Wow, i could smell this all day. Flavour is very nicely balanced, lots of bitterness in the finish, a very good brown ale. Perry is Canada’s best brewer
