Commercial Description:
Our John By Imperial Stout is so deep brown in colour you might as well say it is black. This ale’s powerful malt flavour is not overwhelmed by its alcohol content. Just the thing to ward off the cold of a Canadian winter.

Bottle... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, beige head. Good retention. The nose is a rich, acrid swirl of coffee, smoke, chocolate and charcoal. Full-bodied and silky with medium carbonation. Sweet, dark chocolate with rowdy, burnt, singed notes. Bittersweet, mocha finish. Kudos to mcbackus for cracking open this world class beer!

Bottled thanks to Matt! Just a beautiful pour.. deep garnety brown with a tall, majestic cap of sticky tan head. The aroma picked up toasty caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and biscuits with light coffee roast not far behind.. sweet overall and very enjoyable. The flavor began with some tart chocolate and citrus notes on the tip of the tongue with another, heavier dose of roasted chocolate across the middle.. brown sugar and molasses join some pine and earthy bitterness toward the back.. more bitterness on the finish along with sweet cocoa and pine.. well-balanced and entirely smooth. Medium-bodied with great flow across the palate.. moderate carbonation and a lengthy impression on the finish. Great brew!

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Black pour with a thin broken layer of light tan head. Ton of chocolate and powdered cocoa on the aroma, some nuttiness. Great aroma. Some oak/tannic astringency, a little chocolate, light hop and alcohol burn on the finish. Mild in some ways, aggressive in others, but definitely quality. Interesting brew.

341ml bottle, with thanks to HogTownHarry for this great bonus! Pours a dark brown/black with a two finger dark tan head, moderate lacing. Aroma is cocoa, espresso, and dark roasted malts. Flavor is more of the same, with a lot of bitter roast lingering that interestingly transitions into citrus. Not a lot of complexity, but enjoyable. Thanks again Harry!

(3/1/08) A bottle (brought by jerc) sample shared by duff at Zythos Bier Festival 2008 in Sint Niklaas. Black color with a brown head. Strong aroma of roasted malt and lots of dark chocolate. Nice roasted sweet flavor. Medium to full-bodied.

Bottle. [Thanks to Duff] @ Zythos Bier Festival 2008, Sint Niklaas, Belgium. Dark black color with a small, virtually none appearance, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, beige head. Aroma is heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, coffee, licorice. Flavor is moderate sweet and heavy bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is flat. (010308)
