Commercial Description:
Our John By Imperial Stout is so deep brown in colour you might as well say it is black. This ale’s powerful malt flavour is not overwhelmed by its alcohol content. Just the thing to ward off the cold of a Canadian winter.

ZBF2008@RB table: From bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a little tan head. Thick chocolate aroma, light coffee note. Dense chocolate and coffee flavour. Quite dry and solid malt base. Ends with a lingering bitterness mainly from the hard roasted malt.

Bottle. [Thanks to Duff] @ Zythos Bier Festival 2008, Sint Niklaas, Belgium. Dark black color with a small, virtually none appearance, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, beige head. Aroma is heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, coffee, licorice. Flavor is moderate sweet and heavy bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is flat. (010308)

Bottle at ZBF 08. Not sure who Duff mugged for this one. Black colour with lasting tan head. Choc aroma on an impy stout. Nice hops. Very choccy and smooth in mouth. Long bitter choc finish. Good.

Courtesy of Sammy. It’s black with a huge, creamy, nougat brown and lasting head. The aroma has notes of coffee, chocolate and slightly burnt, roasted malt. The flavour has a light sweetness and a light bitterness and notes of roasted malt, licorice, coffee and light chocolate. The finish is slightly dry and bitter with hints of chalk and alcohol. The body is full and nice!

Bottle. [thank you, Boutip!]
Wonderful bottle btw... Pours a very deep brown, bordering on black. On top is a good, creamy light-brown head - much like coffee cream. Wonderful complex aroma, that belies the relatively subdued ABV. Coffee, deep dark chocolate, caramel and light viniousness. Mouthfeel is generally rather nice, slightly creamy but still light. Flavour is impressively balanced, lots of coffee, sweet sugars, a nice subdued hoppy profile and a good dose of chocolate and roasted malts in the aftertaste. A really impressive Imperial Stout when the ABV is taken into account. Wonderful!

341ml bottle acquired in trade with ughmash (thanks!). Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized tan head. Aromas of coffee, charred wood, caramel, smoke, and roasted coffee. Tastes of chocolate, roast, some dark fruits, coffee, and some vanilla. Kinda of like an Imperial Stout lite but very tasty and very drinkable.
