joey_capps (1453), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada Jul 18, 2006 Dark brown w/ thin, frothy ring of light brown foam. Aroma of dark chocolate, nuts, roasted coffee beans, vanilla & oak. Soft, creamy feel. Nutty, mildly roasty, chocolaty, whiskey-ish flavour w/ a lot of earthy hop bitterness & notes of licorice & vanilla. DougShoemaker (2553), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 14, 2006 Cask @ Volo.
Aroma has dark chocolate, roast coffee, dark brown/auburn when held toward the sun, tiny tan head. Flavour is mild milk chocolate at first, burnt toast, roast malt in the mid section, hops come through towards the end, with mild pit fruits and a hint of smoke. Light bodied, as cask tends to be, bitter and dry at the finish. Very nice beer! Kudos Perry! GregClow (2299), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 3, 2006 Cask at Volo Cask Situation 2006. Dark ruby-brown colour. Aroma has notes of chocolate, whisky, wood and nuts. Flavour of dark fruit, oaky whisky, and mellow chocolate and vanilla notes as it warms. Nice stuff. tupalev (2267), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 2, 2006 At Volo cask days. Dry coffee roast, very chocolaty aroma. Still dark brown, very little head. Watery whisky nutty brown taste – ok. Nice vanilla sweetness. Watery. Not bad! HogTownHarry (3141), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Jun 2, 2006 Updated: Jun 3, 2006Cask. At Volo Cask Situation, May 2006 - blind beer #1. Poured clear dark bright mahogany with a small rocky off-white head. Initial dry roasty aroma, faded to a dry caramel roast malt with some slightly tangy hops. Taste of burnt caramel malt, light hops, sweetness offset by the carbon notes in the finish - reminded me of Crown Royal whiskey, reduced over a medium flame. Average body, syrupy mouthfeel, ashy, bitter aftertaste - I liked it, but I couldn’t get away from that burnt character, and it seemed a little boozy.
