Commercial Description:
Sgt. Major's I.P.A is a robust, "west-coast" style I.P.A. with a tasty white-grapefruit/spice/resin flavour and aroma, making the ale wonderfully refreshing. Its bitterness (68 I.B.U.) is obtained throught the use of copious amounts of Chinook hops. The malts are pale, crystal 60,and chocolate. Available on draught year 'round and soon in 6 packs (bottles) at the LCBO.

This is the best (and only) example of an ipa we have available in Ontario. Has nice bitterness, citrus notes, clear copper colour...and a refreshingly dry aftertaste, very nice summertime brew.

Sampled at the LCBO Summerhill Beer Festival, Toronto, ON. Nervous to try, as I.P.A. ranks high on my "least favourite" list. However, I was presently surprised. Smells like an I.P.A, but tastes "more bitter". Finished well with a lingering bitterness. The only I.P.A. I would order out...

Sampled at the LCBO Summerhill Beer Festival, Toronto ON. Had high hopes, IPA is a favourite style, but this one was not what I was hoping for. Not "West-Coast" at all as in the description - bitter with little in the way of counterbalance. Definitely seems to me to be a bit more toward ESB than IPA.

33 cl stubby, Shelburne. Golden colour, heavy hop aroma. Hoppy burn upon first contact with tongue. Thick almost syrupy in the mouth, bitter spicy finish.

My first real IPA, and I was impressed! Pours an orangy colour with a bit of a yellow tinge, and a small but stubborn head. Aroma is deceptive, smells more like a typical EPA, but with a fair bit of something sweet, maybe caramel, very little indication of what is to come. Taste at first is of a sweet EPA, then the hops hit you, hard. It’s like a caramel covered nut, surrounded by hops. The finish is of course very bitter, with some nice grapefruit tastes evident, and with a really nice sweet malty kick. Aftertaste is mostly hops with a bit of nuttiness to it as well. I really enjoyed it. One of my favourite session brews when I can get a fresh sixer.
