Commercial Description:
Sgt. Major's I.P.A is a robust, "west-coast" style I.P.A. with a tasty white-grapefruit/spice/resin flavour and aroma, making the ale wonderfully refreshing. Its bitterness (68 I.B.U.) is obtained throught the use of copious amounts of Chinook hops. The malts are pale, crystal 60,and chocolate. Available on draught year 'round and soon in 6 packs (bottles) at the LCBO.

Powerful cascade taste and smell. At last, Canada 'gets' the APA. Aggressive, a bit unbalanced, but overall a good beer.

My first Scotch Irish beer Draught at Smokeless Joes, Toronto, Ont. Nut brown colour with light brown head. Not much in the aroma and served too cold for my liking. So I let it sit for a bit and warm up. The aroma started to peek through. Had a dry bitter flavour too it. Flowey hop aroma, with decent bitters hanging off the sides and the back of my tounge. Great and enjoyable.

August 2007. Draft @ BeerBistro. Dark amber copper body with a smallish beige head. Moderate aroma of malt and resiny hops, light note of green hops. Flavour has a good amount of refreshing bitterness, moderately resiny hops and lightly astringent grapefruit in the finish. Less prominent citrus than previous iterations. Average plus palate. (3+) Quite pleasant. 7/3/7+/3+/15
Tasted Blind, March 2007. Volo IPA Challenge Sample #6
Slightly brighter colour than #5, not as much head. Copper-amber body. Muted aroma, resiny lemon, touch of rubbing alcohol. Hop forward flavour with lots of bitterness, not a lot of malt character. Lightly astringent lemon notes. Average palate is a touch on the light side. 6/3/6/3/13
December 2005 Celebrated Christmas Eve with the Tsarina Katrina, and New Years with the Sgt. Bottle. Amber body with a small white head. Plenty of citrus (orange and grapefruit) and resin in the aroma. Flavour is fairly bitter, with a fair dose of the resin and grapefruit of the aroma. Average to medium bodied palate. Tasty. 7-8/3/8/3/16
Toronto Festival of Beer 2002: A newcomer to the festival, this IPA is pretty tasty. I handed one to a friend and told him to remember what this tastes like the next time he has an Alexander Keiths! :) 8/4/8/4/16

07.10.05 Bottle, RBSG. Honey amber, creamy white head laces in spots. More tea, some floral, dry; all hops in flavor. Long bitter finish. Nice session beer that may have been wasted on a slightly spent palate.

Good citrusy hop aroma with some woodiness and malt. Medium copper colour with small dense head that recedes quickly. Nice fresh hop flavour with some fruitiness. Medium high body. On tap at Augusta's Winking Judge in Hamilton.

In the stubby bottle at Smokeless Joe’s in Toronto. Has a real orange and chocolate nose. Pours dark amber with a thin, big-bubbled white head. This has a great benchmark IPA flavor- a strong and long on the tongue bitter bite. The bitternesss lasts long after the last swallow. Really good.

Bottle from Hopdog. Turbid orangy coppery color, with 2-finger off-white head. Aroma of heavy spices, florals, hops, citrus. The taste is very tart, with big spicy hops and citrus fruit. The oxidation ring is very brown, which leads me to believe that this one may have "turned" a bit, which would explain the extreme tartness. Nonetheles, this one was enjoyable.

Bottle: Courtesy of HogTownHarry via trade. Aroma is very hoppy with mostly citrus, some moderate grass, and hints of floral. Pours a transparent amber with a moderate off-white/yellowish head that lasts a minute or so. Flavor starts hoppy with mostly citrus and hints of grassiness. There’s an underlying sweet orange flavor throughout that actually overpowers the hops. Rather sticky mouthfeel for an IPA.
