Commercial Description:
Very robust, with hints of raisins and licorice, this vintage dated black ale will improve in the cellar for several years.

Thanks Phil (Philip)! This beer has a smoked coffee aroma that has hints of vanilla and anise in the background. It is black with a good sized dark brown head that dissolves leaving good lacing. This thick beer has a rich taste of coffee, malt, and hops. The aftertaste produces a cardboard/metallic taste.

2005 bottle (thanks Phil/Boutip). Unbelievably dark brown head. Wonderfully roasty, like a piece of thick dark bread at first, and subsides into a warm coffee bean. Easy to enjoy, mildly bitter, especially as the finish buils up. There is a hint of that stronger european licorice (not the flavorless stuff we Americans call licorice). I would agree that there’s dark fruit, but it’s early, unsweet. Very nice for someone preferring a drier stout without overdone hops, with a subtler light bitter hop that comes out gunning in the finish.

Bottle courtesy of MrManning from Canada. Thanks, Len! Sampled at the Fat Tuesday tasting with some friends. Poured a great dark color. Notes of chocolate and hops and dark fruit on the nose and palate. There’s a hint of vinegar on the finish which is disappointing. Probably could use some age to round things out a bit. A very good beer, just not an exceptional imperial stout. It was a priviledge to try it, and so again, big thanks to MrManning!

Bottle, thanks to Dickinsonbeer. Pours without much head at all. Aroma is dirty lilac and only some chocolate and coffee. Taste is bitter but not in the best of ways. Some underripe fruits, plums and grapes try to intermingle with the chocolate coffeeness without much success. Taste has a sharp and somehow subtle bitterness but the flavor of week old coffee isnt all that impressive. Could be one of the more overrated beers I’ve had in a while.

2005 vintage. Deep charcoal-brown body, medium ochre head. Big, roasty aroma with chocolate, molasses, a touch of smoke, and hints of dark fruit. Chocolatey, roasty body quickly followed by sweet, dark fruits (plum, raisin) and molasses, caramely too. For the first second or two, this really reminds me of Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout on tap. The finish is somewhat hollow, though, following the complex fruits and roast with a brief bitter punch followed by a slowly retreating tart, acidic but empty aftertaste. Still, a bit of work tweaking the finish and cutting the acidity could very well make this a masterpiece. Already very nice as is. Thanks Paul (blankboy) for the bottle!

.Thanks to jerc. I had this sitting with an electric thermometer. Pour was thick like used motor oil. Nose was immediate Malts and roasted goodness, chocolate, and some alcohol. Huge foamy head. Dark brown head left excellent lacing. Huge licorice taste, and wonderful mouth feel. Thickness went from lips to tongue to palate to throat. Warming was nice, very nice. Oh 2005 vintage. Thank you jerc. Really
