ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Nov 30, 2006 Bottle from Blankboy about 8 months ago, thanks Paul! Pours out a black color with a thick tan head on it. Smell is raisins, hops, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and some wood in a way. Taste is smooth and thick, rich and creamy mouthfeel. Like eating a chocolate bar pretty much. Very good stuff, this would be a good impy to have around for those cold months in canada. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Nov 30, 2006 Bottle thanks to the Buffalo connection, Rudolph. Pours dark brown/ black with a small brown head. Aroma of coffee, dry wood mulch, and bakers chocolate. Medium mouthfeel, not as viscous as I was expecting. Flavor of coffee, dark roast, licorice, and very subtle hints of purple grapes. Strong bitterness and burnt malt notes on the finish. Not bad, but I wonder if this is one of the questionable bottles. Thanks again Rudy, I have been wanting to try this one for awhile. moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Nov 4, 2006 Pours dark black with very little head. Smells hot and woody. The palate is medium for an impy. Taste is very bitter chocolate--too much bitterness I thought and some roasted flavors as well. Not as good as I was hoping for. radiomgb (1920), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Nov 4, 2006 Black in colour, lingering brown coloured head, some light lacing. The aroma is of roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate and licorice. The flavour is a bit chalky, some dark chocolate, cold coffee, molasses, malt syrup, christmas cake, plums. Dry mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes quite sweet, lots of chocolate malt, quite long. No sign of any alcohol is a plus but the lack of a substantial body hurts this beer. I can’t see aging this for very long.
341ml bottle. 2005 Vintage
piscator34 (1121), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Nov 3, 2006 2005 vintage from Lubiere (merci!) Almost black, with some hints of red. Vineous aromatics, with some background notes of plum, chocolate, marzipan, and hazelnut. Flavors of roasted barley, chocolate liqueur extract, dark caramel, earthy hops, and a faint wiff of smoke. Surprisingly strong carbonation and spritzy mouthfeel... no huge mouth coating malt character that you find in some imperial stouts. Perhaps this is a bit closer to the slightly lighter and fruitier British interpretation of the style. Quite nice. pineypower (1076), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA Oct 24, 2006 Thanks to Ughsmash. Pours out a deep black color with a moderate sized tan head. Aroma is very roasty with some coffee. The flavor has some notes of roasted malt, coffee and some bittersweet chocolate on the finish. The integration of the flavors just didn’t work like I would have liked it to, not a bad beer by any means though cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Oct 10, 2006 2005 - 12 oz. bottle via trade with JCapriotti - Pours a thick black color with a nice tan head. Nice lacing. Has a chocolate, roasted coffee aroma. Has a dry roasted malt flavor. The roasted malt finish kinda lingers on the palate. Full body. A pretty good beer. Thanks Jason. diabel (1366), Aarschot, Belgium Sep 19, 2006 Updated: Sep 23, 2006Bottle at LCRBM 2, Kulminator, Antwerp, Belgium - Many thanks to Mike (mds) for this one! Totally black body, not transparent. Caramel-brown, creamy head. Good lace. Aroma of fine malts, spices. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish. Not bad, but not splendid either. Lacks some complexity.
