3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Found this tonight at Brewer’s Haven on Vista for $13ish... A deep amber/red brew poured into my HotD goblet producing a super long lasting 1" dark tan head.... great lacing.
The nose is immensely complex... tons of maltiness with big fruitiness, wood, and vinous notes... not as much caramel maltiness as in most traditional wee heavies, but the barrel presence adds pretty interesting elements.
Oak sawdust combines with fruity port elements much more on the front end of the palate... big and fruity moves into a lite darker maltiness... a bit earthy with warmth and then finishes the same way it begins with tangy fruits and dusty oak.
Body is medium... good carbonation... Honestly could use more body and fewer bubbles IMO.
Decent... I appreciate it, but don’t necessarily like it.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From notes. 750 mL bottle shared at a tasting on 5 May. The pour is a dark reddish color with a thin tan head and some light lace. The aroma is surprisingly sour for a Scotch ale. There is a nice malt character but it is really overshadowed by the sourness and a medium booziness. The flavor is a little sweeter than the aroma leads on, but still possesses a strong sourness. There is also a strange booziness from the port barrel which would explain the sour grapey dominance. The mouth feel is a little thin, but the carbonation fails to thicken it up. The aftertaste is a bit dry and nicely finished

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours dark mahogany, finger off white head.
Smell oddly spicy, fruitiness, flowery, gum and estery, sweet.
Taste powerful caramel up front, sharp, but mellows quickly, nutty, fruity, tea.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle into snifter, 2013 bottling. Pours very hazy dark ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, pear, apple, fig, toast, toffee, molasses, red grape, oak, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, yeast ester, and port barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, raisin, fig, pear, apple, red grape, oak, clove, herbal, light chocolate, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy tannin-like tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, molasses, raisin, fig, pear, apple, red grape, oak, clove, herbal, light chocolate, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of malt, yeast ester, and barrel flavors; with a nice malt/tannin balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and lightly slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice scotch ale. All around good balance and complexity of malt, yeast ester, and port barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff.
The beer has a russet body with a small off-white head. Oak, red wine, dessert wine, port, malt, maybe a touch of vanilla. Smooth flavor. A velvety dessert beer. Sweet, but not too. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Not a ton of traditional scotch ale or wee heavy flavor. Like a sweeter, slightly more robust Belgian amber ale. Pretty good.
