COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This "imperial IPA" has a very strong hop aroma and flavor, however it isnít as bitter as the Gale Force IPA. There is a strong malt backbone to offer a level of balance but with over two and a half pounds of hops per barrel it resonates hops from start to finish. With so much flavor happening you miss the 8.6% alcohol by volume so be careful when serving or drinking. Hops were added at every stage of the process...it was dry-hopped with chinooks for two weeks. 75 IBUís. Hops: chinook, centennial, columbus, cascade, bullion.

Appearance was hazy burnt orange gold with creamy off white diminishing 1 finger head, no lacing. Aromas are toffee, sweet malts upfront then citrus, piney hops, hints of alcohol. Taste are smooth sweet caramel malt base upfront that gives way to grassy, piney, lemony and tangerine hops profile with hints of alcohol. Palate was soft smooth CO2 with medium body, then lasting citrusy, piney, grassy long finish. A good DIPA, just a tad to much pine for me.

From 22oz bottle to snifter. Pour is a hazy bronze, thin light head with some heavy lacing. Mose is a big hop aroma, caramel, citrus light citrus. Taste is not as bitter as i though, medium bodied with sour and sweet notes at times. Finishes very well for a double, with a lingering taste and that warm mouth feel. Very cool beer.

Interesting DIPA. It's a hop bomb, with a very high bitterness. But there's a slightly sweet malty undercurrent going on. I wouldn't say this is balanced per se, but I haven't tasted DIPAs that are so bitter and yet have discernible maltiness. Good. B. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Belmont Station. Pours light, translucent copper with a slight beige head. Aroma of resin. Med + body. Flavor is heavy, juicy hop nearly eclipsing a decent caramel backbone. Iím getting significant hop burn. Flavor is strong mix of citrus/resin and the malt. Hop heads should enjoy the bitter, bitter, hoppy finish. I do.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours a nice copper color with a short lived off white head. The nose has light tropical hop notes with a bit of citrus zing. The flavor is pretty subdued for a IIPA. There are notes of toasted brown bread, grapefruit, orange, and tropical fruit. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Middle of the road for the style, but not offensive in any way.

8/20/2011: Scuttlebutt Hoptopia Imperial India Pale Ale... Aroma: Frush, juicy citrus, including grapefruit, tangerine, hints of pineapple and mango. Appearance: The color of honey, hazy; nice, bubbly beige head with spotty lacing. Flavor: Toffee maltiness overrun by tons of great hops; ample bitterness that grows throughout: citrus peel, orange, red grapefruit; just a touch of nice alcohol vents in the finish. Palate: Average. Overall: Very tasty!

1 pint 6 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 8% by Vol.). Rating #42 for this beer.

12oz bottle pours with a clear copper body that supports a weak white head. The aroma is a mix of sweet malts, floral hops, orange peel and some pine like hoppiness. The taste has plenty of hop bitterness mixing with a modest degree of hop flavor coming from pine, floral, citrus and tropical fruit like hoppiness. Behind the hops is an adequate malt sweetness that is creating a pretty nice body for this beer. It seems the hop profile is going in all directions and pulling itself apart to a certain extent. Plenty of hops here though.

Bottle. Cloudy orange with white head. Light citrus hop aroma. Flavour is much citrusy hop not all that bitter but with a sweet naartjie note. Long hop finish. Does not taste all that strong, but is.

Hazy orange with a bit of white head. Aroma is sweet with some citrus, and taste is the same, and relatively bitter and boozy. Kinda muddled and unremarkable $3/12oz

12oz. bottle in my Spiegalau ipa glass pours a slightly hazy orange color with q thick off white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of pine, tropical, resin and citrus. Tastes of all the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is thin and oily with ok carbonation ans a dry finish. Overall this is a more of a tropical citrus forward double ipa. Not as hoppy as I expected though. I like it better on tap. One of my favorites from Scuttlebutt still.
