2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
12 oz. bottle of Kennebunkport Brewing Co. Blueberry Wheat Ale, from Trader Joeís.
Aroma: 3/10: Smells like straight-up Blueberry Pie Filling. And not the good kind, with the real blueberries mixed in to the gelatinous goo, but just the plain gelatinous goo.
Appearance: 2/5: With this being labeled as a wheat ale, I expected some of the typical cloudiness associated with wheat ales. I saw none of it.
Taste: 6/10: It actually tastes pretty darn good. Not great, but better than expected. Better than some of the similar-type beers.
Palate: For what it is, pretty refreshing. Medium-high carbo, relatively light, with a slight oilyness.
Overall: I expected to really hate this beer - on the order of total score <1. But, surprisingly, itís not bad. Better than "Wild Blue" that you see all over, by AB. I anticipate that this beer would be great after a long yard mowing session... a unique summer beer - something different than all of the citrusy summer beer clones that have exploded on the market. The aroma is cheap-smelling, and the appearance isnít great; taste is just so-so... but, put them all together and the total is more than a sum of its parts. However - buyer beware - you must LOVE blueberry to love this beer. 8/20

Draft sample at Cherry Blossom Beer & Wine fest, cloudy darker orange color with white head. Aroma notes of blueberry and pale malt sweetness. Taste adds blueberry syrup and cracker malt sweetness. Light body, moderate carbonation, sticky with fruity finish. Another refreshing Sea Dog fruit beer.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
This is one of my favorite american wheat beers. Although they label this here as a fruit beer, it really is more like a wheat. Not nearly as fruity as some other fruit beers, that mainly add fruit in. I believe this beer uses the blueberries in the brewing process, so doesnít have that overwhelming flavor, but noticable for sure. Pours a pale yellow, slight golden color. Decent carbonation, not slightly flat like some other wheats. Am always looking out for this at festivals.

Bottle: Near brassy orange with quickly dissipating off-white foam. Smell of blueberry and some funk. Not too much in the flavor, sort of corny actually. The bottle a bought had a different label, if Iíd known thatís what this was I would have passed on it.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Shorty at Yard House - Cincinnati, labeled "Bluepaw Wild Blueberry" on the menu. Pours a semi-cloudy gold with a small but resilient eggshell cap. Notes of blueberry, wheat, pale malts, lemon, and wet cracker. Light-bodied, with medium to high carbonation and a dry, malty, fruity mouthfeel. I probably wonít ever order this again, but itís not bad.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Smell of grain and lots of juicy berries. Clear pale pour with little head. Light lager flavor with some fairly natural tasting blueberry, slightly sweet but not too much. Meets its goal well. Light bodied.

During our beer tasting group we decided to compare it to Budweiser when another compared it to pancakes or Leinenkugals.

As soon as I opened the bottle I was hit with a wave of blueberry extract aroma. I have a had a few blueberry beers, some good, some not so good, and this one falls into the latter. It has a very fake blueberry popsicle sort of flavor that isnít too pleasing. Maybe on a hot summers day I could enjoy one, but until then, I think iíll pass.
