emobassfoo (178), Webster, New York, USA Jul 9, 2007 Pours a rich a mahogany color, looks clear, not much of a head with sub-par lacing. Aroma is awesome! Never smelled a beer like this before. Main note of interest is the hazelnut, but there is a touch of chocolate and roasted barley behind there. Taste is just as awesome! Nuts, caramel, chocolate. Very appetizing. Could be a real refreshing dessert beer. On second sip, this riverdriver starts off smooth, then dry, then relaxes into an almost oil-like quality. I like Sea Dog’s fruit beers, but this porter took me completely by surprise. I’m very happy to know that Hegedorns also sells 6 packs of these. larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Jul 8, 2007 Small light brown head fades quickly. Deep dark red barely translucent body. Sweetish sugary licorice aroma with no resistance. Deep dryish licorice and roasty caramel taste. Watery mouthfeel. No real aftertaste. Kind of boring and one-dimensional. (0.355l bottle at Oliver Twist.) freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Jul 3, 2007 A nice dark mahogany brew with a solid, but quickly dissipating rocky tan head, this brews most appetizing quality is its nutty malty aroma which I found to sport more caramel aromas than hazelnut. For all the strength of the aroma, however, the mouthfeel is somewhat thin and drying. A present bitterness accompanies the otherwise sweetish swallow. Notes of mocha and hazelnut drift welcomingly into the aftertaste. A solid entry, but a little more body would have been welcome. asedzie (453), San Francisco, California, USA Jul 1, 2007 Deep dark mahagony color with off-white head. Overwhelming hazlenut aroma - but not any other scent apart from this. Very light flavor, not much body to this beer. Some sourness and roasted, smokey flavors and bitterness near the end and in the finish. Carbonated mouthfeel. Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 28, 2007 light brown with ruby red highlights.creamy mocha looking head.aroma is a blend of coffee, mocha, oatmeal, and hazelnut.flavor is roasted malts, coffee, hazelnut, mocha, amd smoke.body is a bit thin but not to bad for 5.6 abv. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jun 17, 2007 Bottle -- deep and dark brown with a thin tan top. The aroma is like hazelnut coffee, thick and syrupy sweet. The falvor isn’t quite as robust, but still carries with that sweet bite of the hazelnut, but I wish it were as robust as the aroma. (#2982, 6/17/2007) Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Jun 8, 2007 Deep red-brown body, thin off-white head. Aroma of cocoa puffs and earthy hops, with light hazelnut notes. Dry roasted malt body with cocoa and a touch of hazelnut, but the latter is not a dominant characteristic. Light and almost biscuity (burnt biscuit) body. Rather thin, but dangerously drinkable. bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Jun 6, 2007 Well the aroma really is hazelnut. Nothing but. Another "flavor added" beer. Seems like the easy way to brewing. Dark reddish brown, nearly opaque, color with a light beige head. Medium bodied. Creamy, frothy, way nutty. The finish seems to be nutty. A slight taste of roasted malts. Even toasted malts. A bit sweeter than seems appropriate. There is a light bit of hop. The additive seems over done, but it is interesting.
