A banger ESB from N.S.! I am loving these Sea Level brews. My only complaint is that they fill their cans a wee bit high and the carbonation is always a bit low. For this style though, it fits the bill and works well. Light copper with a fine lacing white head, notes of earthy hops, caramel, honey and cereal. A great flavour that starts heavy on the sweet malt side and transitions into a bitter beast that makes you crave the sweetness again. Soft carbonation with a lightly oily medium-full body, a delicious brew that I would session with alacrity.

I had fun with this little bitter. Pours a clear amber, with yes a weird little head. Aroma was of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and pine. Tasted woody, toffee, pine, and biscuit. Very unique taste and very memorable. Had a medium smooth body with low carbonation and malt bitter aftertaste. Haven’t had a ESB for a while now and glad I tried this one.

12oz can into an English pint. Pours a clear, deep amber with a half-inch, lasting tan head and some lacing. A bit of carbonation. Nose of caramel and citrusy hops with a similar caramel sweetness flavour-wise, with a lasting bitterness. Not too bad!

Pours amber. Nice aroma at first but buttery diacetyl really comes through ruining it. Way too little carbonation, too heavy on the finish hops for the style. Slick slick slick mouthfeel, butterscotch ruins what seems like might be a good beer underneath. I know some diacetyl is okay in a Bitter but this has taken that thought to new heights. Sorry but i tried cans of the product and everyone said it’s way better at the pub, tried it there, not as bad but still ruined with butterscotch.

Pours a straw colour, not what I’d expect from an ESB. Nice aroma, but piney hops don’t add to the style. Taste is west coast pale ale, not ESB. Way too much carbonation for an ESB, way too much hops, way too much bitterness. Not complaining about the fact that it’s bitter, but if you’re going to call something an ESB, them make an ESB, not a west coast pale. This beer isn’t half bad but it’s so far off the mark in style that I thought that this can might have been mis-labeled.

Surprenante ESB. Bonne bière. (344-10/110912)

500ml bottle. Amber pour with very little head, some lacing. Aroma definitely points to dry hopsing. Taste is dominated by the dry hops, some caramel and tart fruit undertones. Palate was disappointingly thin. Overall, quite good apart from the palate, but it tasted more like an American Pale (but a very good one) than an ESB, likely due to the dry hops process.

650ml bottle. Pours a deep clear amber with light tan head. Big citrusy hops on the nose with a solid caramel underbelly. A little confused on the palate and lighter bodied than expected. Caramel sweetness up front but the hops and bitterness kick in on the mid-palate and flow through the finish nicely.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2011 1L growler. Rich frothy head havig auburn colour. really hoppy on the nose, nice citrus notes and fresh pine cones, it also has a sort of creamy, frothy essence., it is fairly bitter on the palate with pine cones and an almost citrus notes. very nice stuff. one of my favorites in the province. Especially considering it is supposed to be an ESB.
