This beer is a blend of Old World influence and modern technique. We used domestic malt and wheat and distinctly American hops to produce this rich, full bodied ale and then we fermented it with two different yeast strains. On top of all this, we barrel-aged this beer in charred oak bourbon barrels for over three months. The end result is a dark ruby colored ale with very intense aromatics. We are serving this beer in a snifter to provide the full experience for this intense beer. The shape of the snifter allows you to get the full sensory experience from the beer. First batch (draft) at 9.2%.

Pours a deep copper sienna color with a finger of eggshell foam that settles out. Nice harmony of bourbon sweetness and complexity throughout. Notes of creme brulee, caramelized sugar, leather, vanilla, bourbon, hint of butterscotch at just the right moments. Nuances of floral honey, earthy bitter rawhide, boozy bourbon. Well constructed and tasty.

Draft pour has a dark brown color and a thin ring of tan head. Aroma has sweet bourbon, barrels, roasted char, mild bitterness, and aged hops. Mouth feel is medium full with great coating. Flavor is more of the same, roasted, aged hops, big and chewy.

Bottle thanks to Team Boston. Pours a dark amber with small off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong toffee, caramel, dark fruit, bourbon. Thick mouth, candy sugar, raisin, bourbon, vanilla, very good.

2013 bottle. Pours mahogany into a tulip. Off-white head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Vanilla, oak and bourbon. Soft with sweet bourbon and vanilla upfront turning midly sour in the lasting bitter finish.

Pours dark ruby red with a moderate, foamy, off-white head that dissipates quickly. Nose is powerfully sweet and boozy malt with notes of nougat, umami, and oak. Taste is a pleasing combination of huge malty sweetness and a nice hop bite. Full bodied brew with lively carbonation. Very nice!

Pours a dark brown color with off-white head, not much. Dark fruits, caramel, and some toffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes sweet. Too sweet for me.

10 oz. snifter @ Portsmouth Gas Light Co. Deep Crimson color with slow diminishing head. Aroma is pretty nice, light bourbon on top of brown sugar, vanilla and alcohol soaked raisins.

The taste is sweet, boozy and decadent. Bourbon nauances sitting on top vinous notes, vanilla bean, and oak tannins with a syrupy texture. A bit of chocolate hints in the backend as it warms. Medium body with a sweet and woody /oaky finish. Nice light warming sensation after the sip. The Gas Light Co. is really stepping up their tap list in a big way, lots of solid offering on the Street level! This was a treat to get without having to drive to Portland.

Dark brown with red tinge, small tan head. Aroma malty, caramel, dark dried fruits, a little citrus and pine hops. Full body. Some warming alcohol. Flavor is great balance of sweet and bitter. Spicy and piney hops. Caramel, dates, molasses, a little wood. Quite complex. Nice bitter hops but the sweeter flavors predominate. An ideal barleywine.

From the 650 ml. chilled bottle. 2013 batch. The pour is a nice, medium to dark amber with a tan head. Red hues. The aroma emits plenty of barley malts but there is actually a chocolate thing going. No kidding. I think they use chocolate malts to give it that extra twist. The body is medium to full. The taste is lovely with its sweet barley malts playing footsies with the chocolate malt and a modest, dry finish. Fresh, this is a fine take on a barleywine. I wonder how it will be a year from now?

Rcvd in trade. The appearance has a dark brown colored body with a thin half fingered white foamy head that dies leaving a thin film of a head. The lacing is thin and sticks to the sides of the glass at the top of the body and ends up just sliding with the sips. The smell has a super strong bourbon up front with some plums and raisins to combine along with some caramels and toffee. There is that element of tobacco in the aroma. The taste is super sweet and becomes slightly spicy and leads into a dry raisinous bourbon-like aftertaste with a sticky sweet bourbon finish. On the palate, it sits about a medium to heavy, not sessionable - meant to sip, and has a carbonation that is fairly smooth and is good for the style and for me. Overall, this is a good American Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels - well, its exactly what Sebago was looking to do, in my opinion, this is pretty good and worth a try, but will say not as hoppy as some American Barleywines I’ve had and yes I realize this could be for the fact that this is from 2013.
