Part of the Single Batch Series
This beer is a blend of Old World influence and modern technique. We used domestic malt and wheat and distinctly American hops to produce this rich, full bodied ale and then we fermented it with two different yeast strains. On top of all this, we barrel-aged this beer in charred oak bourbon barrels for over three months. The end result is a dark ruby colored ale with very intense aromatics. We are serving this beer in a snifter to provide the full experience for this intense beer. The shape of the snifter allows you to get the full sensory experience from the beer. First batch (draft) at 9.2%.

Bottle. Cloudy amber brown color, small edge head. Aroma of spiced and toasted caramel. Taste is rich and spiced butterscotch. Nice.

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a finger or so worth of off-white head. S: A nice note of caramel, toffee, and burnt sugar up front. The barrel is subtle, but does provide a nice vanilla note that blends nicely with the sugary characteristics of the beer. T: Quite a bit of caramel and burnt sugar up front along with a touch of alcohol. Not too much in the way of fruitiness, but some nice barrel and bourbon notes. M: Medium bodied with a pretty decent level of carbonation for a barrel aged barleywine. D: A very nice beer indeed. I was looking forward to trying this one and it did not disappoint.

(Draft) Pours a clear dark amber body with a small beige head. Aroma of toffee, fruit, brown sugar, some vanilla, and light funkiness. Flavor of caramel, bread, fruit, and moderately bitter hops with a dry finish.

A dark reddish amber barley wine with a thin white head. In aroma, smooth caramel, candy sugar, vanilla, light maple, and warming alcohol. In mouth, intense barley wine with good hops, decadent sweet malt, maple notes, and warming alcohol. On tap at Portland location, April 2 2010.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2013. Dark red colored beer with a deep dark red glare coming through, small off-white head. Smell malts, alcohol, some sweetness. Taste malts, lightly some sweetness and some alcohol. Very good!

66cl bottle sample @ RBBWG 2013, courtesy of ThirstyBird. Cuivrée, col beige fin. Arôme caramel, malté, note de fudge assez dominant et vraiment fantastique, sucre brun. Palais est agréablement bien malté, caramel subtile avec une certaine douceur résiduelle qui fini par collé aux lèvres, pointe d’épices pour un houblonnage léger qui procure une fine amertume et note citronnée. Se termine sur un profil malté orienté vers le biscuité. Délicieux.

Pours with an amber body that exhibits copper edges and a tiny white head. The big aroma offers up fresh oak and a modest degree of bourbon rolling into sharp booze notes. The taste is rich with a sweet mix of dark fruity esters, pine hop flavor, some grapefruit hop flavor and then moving into fairly smooth bourbon notes. Wow, this is rich, bold and smooth and with a terrific balance between beer and barrel notes. Interesting, lots of oak in the nose but not so much in the flavor. One of the better done barrel aged American style barleywines I’ve had.

On tap at Sebago, Portland ME in April 2010. Just called Barley Wine if my memory and notes serve but I guess it’s the same stuff. Quite dark - copper colour. Strong raisiny fruit aroma. More fruit on the palate - figs and Dundee cake. Very sweet. Full mouthfeel with a slightly viscous texture. Quite bitter aftertaste - sort of medicinal, cough linctus feel. Rather hot alcohol. Interesting and tasty, if a little rough around the edges.

Had this in a blind barleywine tasting. .. quite a bit of whiskey, thinking its about 6months - 1 year old .. . mild mouth, but still a bit of a mouth.. . lush beer .. . . there wasn’t alot of outward affection in my family, the occasional high five..
