COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Dark Wheat Project- a joint group effort. We invited 20 craft beer lovers to brew with us for a cause: the American Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine. Our guest brewers helped us carefully blend several varieties of dark specialty wheat malts with barley. At 7.5% Alc. by Vol., this black creation is an uncommon version of the traditional wheat beer. Thank you to our generous guest brewers for their labor and enthusiasm to make Dark Wheat Project and the Trek a success.

Another home run by Sebago. Pours thin and black with no head. Aroma is rich malts, soft wheat, sweetness, dark fruits. Drinks with fuller body then it appears but isnt cloying. Taste is extremely smooth and sweet balanced with a bit of bitter from the deep roast malts and a very nice fresh fruity body. finishes with sweetness and no alcohol to be noticed. I’m buying more if I can find it.

This has a vibrant brown pour with about two inches of fluffy, foamy, tan head and nice clinging lacing. The aroma is full of wheat, malts, and maybe molasses. The body is of smooth, fairly full texture and the long lasting head tickles the upper lip. The taste has a bold wheat and malty start with a bitter hoppiness that sneaks up on the second or third sip. A very nice beer.

A friend at work hooked me up with some sebago beers and this one is delicious! It’s like a wheaty porter with dark malts up front and almost a chocolate porter-like finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Coffee tones abound in this well balanced beer which has a nice sweet molasses layer underneath. The only down side for me is the palate seems a bit too wet which kind of waters down the goodness in this beer. There is also a bit of an ashy flavor in the finish.

Draught @ Sebago Brewing Company, Portland, ME: Came as a ruby black pour, a big tan head up top. Inviting aroma of caramel, raisins, and wet wheat. Rich to drink with lots of black cherry, boozy and bitter but no real hop character. Where’s the weiss? This really tastes strongly of the dark and less of the wheat. Perhaps lesser marks for the style, but I have to say it’s an enjoyable beer by itself. Good work.

On tap at Sebago Portland , ME location. Pours out dark brown with some red highlights topped with a small sand head. Aroma was of sweet pit fruit, rich malts, nuts, and wheat. Taste was more of the sweetness. A nice light molasses note along with a nice full body.

Bomber thanks to Arbitrator. Pours a clear dark cola brown color with a small fading tan head. Nice aroma of caramel and roast, wheat, and some dark fruit notes. Very good flavor, huge caramel and toffee with plum, raisin, roastiness, and slight booze. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a rather smooth mouthfeel. Pretty good stuff overall. Great for a dunkelweizen.

Draught at the brewpub. Almost black colour, seems cloudy. Small stable light brown head. Very roasted flavour, vinous. Seems to have a little burning aftertaste, almost like chili or hopburn. Still balanced, though.

Pours a two finger light khaki head that slowly fades leaving some lace. Nose is watery grain and figs. Very dark brown color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Flavor is roasted coffee with some earthy bitterness at finish. $8.99 for a 22oz bottle from Smiley’s Discount Beverage Dover, NH

(Rating #3187)
