mj (4973), Colorado, USA Mar 15, 2008 Served on nitro at the brewery. Proper dark brown colored body with a 1/2 inch tan head thaty dies quickly. Sweet, sugary dark chocolate and coffee flavor, medium roast presence, overall very well-made and delicious, with a dryness and coarseness that’s to be expected. Smooth texture and a bit thin, but nicely made and without flaws. Interesting to drink side-by-side with the Shade Mountain Stout, both on nitro, and the differences become immediately apparent - there’s nearly no fruit notes to be found in this one, and it’s drier, more ashy, but with less roast. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 7, 2007 Opaque black with mocha head and lace. Bitter coffee, roast aroma. Basically roasty. Dry with a bite, hops present. Stouty with an attitude. Fine, but just not my favorite of the lineup because of the bitterness. Liking it is correlated with liking coffee. Medium plus mouthfeel.
Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA May 22, 2006 Tap at brewpub. Pours a very deep dark black with nice creamy dark beige head- not nitro pour. Aroma is lots of dry roasted barleywith some chocolate malt to back it up. Semi sweet up front, then the roast hits, followed by chocolate, then a dry light acrid feel in the end. Very smooth and easy drinking. A very well made stout and conforms to the style very well, just like all thier beers. Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 15, 2007 On tap at the brewery. Dry bitter malty grains, roasted coffee bitterness and mild hops. Dry and smoky. Oily black with tan lacing head. Heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts rich and roasty. Coffee and chocolate and smoke. Light licorice. Big old dry bitter with some sour coffee tang. Dry hops bitter finish with tongue-coating bitter after. Quite a stout. Rich and flavorful. kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 14, 2006 On tap at brewpub. Opaque black pour, creamy dark brown head, very good lacing. Burnt and roasted malt with some molassas and coffee. Pretty hoppy aroma for a Dry Stout. Very hoppy roasted malt flavor with coffee, a touch of smoke, and a light astringency. Perfect thin and oily texture, not watery like many Dry Stouts. Very much like 3 Floyds Black Sun with a better mouthfeel because of being on draft (actually rated this 0.1 higher). Reading the other 2 reviews, this appears to be a significantly different beer than what they had. Most importantly, this was not on nitro as the previous ratings stated. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Mar 28, 2008 Growler, courtesy of LordMaynard. Thanks, Russ!! Pours a dark, murky chocolate-brown color; khaki head with large-bubbled retention and lacing. Nougat, chocolate, and some wet malts in the aroma; touch of cocoa; a bit messy. Medium mouthfeel: slightly watery at the edges, with plenty of freeze-dried coffee, caramel, and basic bitter chocolate, again, messy and a touch chalky; not a lot of complexity to either the coffee or the chocolate notes. Medium, dry finish: bitter chocolate, nougat, and mineral bitterness. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2009 Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a black color with a medium sized khaki head. The aroma was dry, bitter and roasty with notes of coffee. The flavor was dry, bitter and roasty with notes of coffee. The finish was long and the same. Typical for the style. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 26, 2009 On draft at the brewpub. Pours a dark cola with a medium light beige head. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, and light malt. Taste of cocoa, baking chocolate and malt.
