Commercial Description:
Porter was a favorite of George Washington whose white horse was said to have spent its last days grazing behind Governor Snyder's mansion. In George's day, ingredients such as molasses were often employed to make ale. We use five different malts and a touch of molasses for this ale's smooth and complex taste.

Very dark, almost black, it pours from a growler with a limited head. Good supporting vegetal hops stage behind straightforwardly chocolatey malts, airy and fruity if not showing tons of depth besides cigary roastiness. Drinkability beyod criticism, light-medium bodied, gentle carbonation. Seemed a bit middle of the road to me, but I feel the growler might not render it full justice and I’m certainly looking forward to visiting the pub in upcoming years.

On tap at the Selins Grove Brew Pub. Poured a deeper brown with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, and some caramel. Tastes of roast, chocolate, light coffee, and grainy.

Draft at the brewery, August 2007
Dark brown colored body with some amber-brown hues at the bottom of the glass. Light-to-moderate roast presence in nose and flavor, with some molasses and maple scents, sweet smelling overall. Toasted grains tasted, along with some sharp hoppy notes, and some dry wood flavors in the finish, but not as much roast as in the nose. Has the faintest bit of vanilla as well. A nice porter but nothing exceptional, and in fact there’s some lactic acidity that lingers in the finish that I don’t like so much.

Surprisingly hoppy, herbal, grassy, vegetal aroma with plenty of chocolate, soy and roasty character as well. Dark brown body with a low tan head that recedes to ring. Chocolate subtone to the intensely roasty flavour with some light fruitiness emerging after the strong bitter finish in the aftertaste. Medium light body is quite dry with lively carbonation that is softly engaging on the tongue. Sampled on the PA trip 2005.

Decent conventional porter on tap at the brewpub. Roast and molasses aroma. Creamy with lots of lace on dark brown, abundant head. Molasses is the taste, medium mouthfeel.

Poured a mahogany color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, tobacco, and chocolate as well. Taste of roasted coffee, some smoke, chocolate, caramel malts, and a light hoppiness as well.

Deep brown with amber highlighhts with a very small head. Aroma was sweet with lots of chocolate and some black harsh malts. Flavor has a molasses/sugary taste along with a light malt backbone and low body. Good amount of chocolate flavors throughout which was nice.
