Commercial Description:
Porter was a favorite of George Washington whose white horse was said to have spent its last days grazing behind Governor Snyder's mansion. In George's day, ingredients such as molasses were often employed to make ale. We use five different malts and a touch of molasses for this ale's smooth and complex taste.

On tap at the brewery. Dusty earthy malt, dry roasted grains and bitter coffee grounds. Light hoppiness with licorice and tobacco, raisin. Dark brown reddish clear with off-white lacing head. Medium heavy body with light carbonation. Starts sweet with malty grains, raisins, coffee and licorice. Bitter chocolate. Mild bitterness and coffee grounds. Toasted or slightly burnt grains. Neutral fruit finish. Tongue-coating sweetness with light coffee bitter after.

Pours a maple colour with red undertones. Tastes of nuts, baking chocolate, malts, and coffee. Had a nice creamy, malty aroma.

On tap at the Selins Grove brew pub. Poured a kind of thin looking (for a porter) cola ruby color. Aroma was roasted malt and some coffee bitterness. Flavor was a little on the butter end with some nice roast, but overall a little thin. Decent porter though.

Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a bright red-brown color with a trace of a tan head. The aroma was bitter and roasty with notes of coffee. The flavor was bitter, roasty and grainy with a hint of caramel and coffee. The finish was long, bitter and roasty. Ok.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours ruby-hued brown with nice khaki head. The aroma is ashy with notes of chocolate and tobacco, some black pepper, and earth. The flavor is pepper and ash with some burnt sourness. Hints of coffee grounds pop up here and there. There’s a bit of earthy hop bitterness in the finish. Interesting interpretation, but not one I care for.

Sample platter tap. Midnight dark. Aroma of dark chocolate, some red fruit, toasty malts. Coffee, espresso, hints of semi-sweet chocolate. Bit bitter, and the taste really kills your tastebuds.

Tap. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt, touch of prune. Flavor of coffee grindings, roasted malt, quite sweet, some earth, some milky chocolate, but very faint on these last two notes. Light bodied and a touch astringent. Ok.
