Two years following the original collaboration which created Chalky’s Bite - Rick Stein asked Sharp’s once again to work with him in creating a unique new beer. This time, the novel ingredient would be ginger. In Chalky’s Bark, ginger works in synergy with continental hops and gives a spicy lemon-fruit nose. The heat of ginger lifts the gently-sweet body and contrast beautifully with citrus fruitiness in the mouth. As with Chalky’s Bite it is conditioned in the brewery and in the bottle for four months.

330ml Bottle from Tesco. Bright yellow body, thin white head. Nose is floral, a bit spicy, not as ginger as expected. The ginger comes in the taste, lightly balanced with floral hops, with orange and sweet citrus. High carbonation but juicy body. Much better than expected.

Bottle on holiday in Cornwall. Not as good as Chalky’s Bite. Murky yellow gold with a thin white head. Aroma has ginger, soy sauce, slightly floral. Flavour spicy ginger floral notes, some citrus. Not bad, quite refreshing.

Bottle, fromTesco. Deep golden brown in colour with a thin but persistent off white head and gentle condition. An initial bitter orange citrus note, some resinous hops and an Orvalesque hopsack bretty yeastiness lend an appealing air to the aroma, quite dry and bitter in the mouth with a much more subdued hopsack note and a murmur of tangy orange before a suggestion of ginger spice emerges, finish is thin and dry with some slight spiciness and a muted hop bitterness lingering into the finish

Bottle at Quilon. Oh no Rick Stein beer! Do I need to start quoting poetry in a pretentious fashion? Or can I just have a few of these beers and get smashed? Light pale ale in colour. Restrained palate and smells, delicate almost spicy hops, almost Belgian in taste, with a very refined hint of ginger in the aftertaste. Not an assault on the palate like Ginger Marble or similar, much more subtle. Served with chicken and masala dosa, this was brilliant with the food. May have been a little light on its own.
