Commercial Description:
Two years following the original collaboration which created Chalky’s Bite - Rick Stein asked Sharp’s once again to work with him in creating a unique new beer. This time, the novel ingredient would be ginger. In Chalky’s Bark, ginger works in synergy with continental hops and gives a spicy lemon-fruit nose. The heat of ginger lifts the gently-sweet body and contrast beautifully with citrus fruitiness in the mouth. As with Chalky’s Bite it is conditioned in the brewery and in the bottle for four months.

Pours out a bubbly white cap with an ok ropy but slippery lacing. The aroma is light overall: mild ginger and bread. Decent flavour with a very nice bitterness that dulls out the ginger (which is already light), apple and yeast give it a touch of gueuze sourness. A bit too fizzy in the mouth and it isn’t all that soft but it is easy drinking with a lingering light bitterness.

Bottle. Golden beer with a floral hopped aroma with a hint of ginger. The flavour is ginger hopped and lightly bitter. Overall a very average beer.

330ml Bottle - Golden with a white head and lively carbonation. Hoppy aroma with some appealing hints of ginger. Spicy taste with the ginger standing out and giving it a nice bite (no pun intended!). Very enjoyable and refreshing.

330ml, bottle conditioned, bought at Utobeer and drunk on my hotel room in Earls Court. Clear, golden body. Modest bubbly, white head. Fresh smell of floral hops with a spicy hint. Dry and fruity flavour with a lighter ginger touch. Discreet bitter finish. Semi-sweet and soft carbonated. A thirst quenching session beer (London, 04.08.2009).

Bottle at the Rake, 5th June 09. Lemon & ginger aroma, but needs more ginger. Amber colour. Forgettable flavour, a real let down.

Cask and bottle in the rake. Alround rating for both: Cask: hardly any ginger and poor condition. Bottle: This is what the scores for, Gingery(yet could do with more ginger), peachy fleshy fruit, theres small biscuity pale malt character and the hops purely balance. Its quite tasty, but a little restrained.

A very crisp looking pale straw colout with a long-lasting active white head. A very lemony nose lends an almost shandy like quality to the sweet malts and very, very faint ginger. Something very fresh and clean here along the lines of celery too. Oh, very spicy in the mouth. The ginger comes across as very Christmassy, which is odd paired with the lightness of beer. Some cinnamon or nutmeg spice and dryness here too. The sweet light malts are nice and apparent. It is interesting if a little contrived. A powdery texture and lack of dryness leave me unsatisfied. It’s all bark and no bite.
