3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
From Jan 2009: Compared to its slightly weaker cask version this is a whole lot better in my eyes.
Clear 500ml bottle with a long life left, I poured it into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ pint vase.
The body was a clear, bright amber. On top sat a good off-white foaming head, this stayed for a good while before fading away leaving lacing on the glass.
Mild toffee aromas hit my nose, followed by a more normal (for UK Bitters) hop and malt smell.
As the beer warmed it got sweeter but it started out with a bitter hop flavour which I enjoyed. Throughout it had a dry aftertatse.
Couldn’t call it full bodied, but it was no lightweight either. A long way from a great Bitter but overall about average for a bottled one.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Clear copper with a good sized white head. Aroma is mellow and balanced, nothing really pops out, just the biscuit and caramel malts and slightly earthy hops expected from the style. Flavour follows with the same notes as the nose. Ultimately a pretty simple beer that doesn’t ask for or require much analysis - and sometimes, that’s just what I’m looking for in a beer. Luckily, this was one of those times.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
500 ml bottle shared by Lubiere (merci!), served cold in a tulip glass. 24SE11.
App.: Dirty, cloudy deep amber with an off-white rim.
Aroma: Really odd, dirty, earthy, slight chemical note, some sulphur notes, borderline shit note, very oxidized fruit, wet ash, mainly gross.
Palate: Medium body, nearly flat.
Flav.: Some brown sugar, fruits, oxidized fruits, still a bit dirty, cardboard, wet ashes, a slightly spicy note; dry with minimal bitterness and a somewhat watery finish.
Doomed for sure.
