2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
from Au Grain d’Orge, Crissier - clear dark amber beer with no foam left; shy flowery and caramelish aroma; thin-bodied and pretty tasteless; subtle yet fair carbonation; gently bitter and pretty sharp finish where hints of red fruits and caramel show up - very modest to stay polite

Bottle shared with McTapps. Pours in light brown with small head. Aroma of toffee and honey. Taste is sweetish so you must like something like that. I do.

Bottle shared with MichaelBruch. Hazelnut brown in colour, no head. Taste of sweet, roasted nuts combined with some floral touch. Very sweet, hardly any bitterness to be found. I like it, though it may be boring after a while. Very quaffable.

[500ml bottle, gift from Lesley - cheers!] Pours a reddish-amber with a swiftly vanishing off-white head and a fair amount of fizz. Toffee from the off, with rather a lot of butter, and then some nice oaky, woody notes. There’s a little twist of lemon and a touch of earthy bitterness in the finish.. Unfortunately there’s the metallic hint of pasteurisation hanging over it, which is a shame - this could be a decent beer if bottle conditioned.

Light brown colour. Quite a fresh fruity aroma. Well balanced, quite malty and has a light sweetness. Very nice, smooth mouthfeel. Great session bitter.

Lovely, sweet, simple tasting. Deep and crisp flavour that rolls off the tongue and begs you to have another bottle.

2.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle. Pours a clear rusty amber with a decent, but fading off-white head. Nose is impressive, not hoppy but loads of melted caramel and toffee smells. Very lush. In the mouth a different story, though you still get the caramel and toffee, it’s lost a little and it’s as lush as the nose suggests. Not much bitterness to balance against that and it all peters out a bit too sharply... Could do with a bit more bite.

From Jan 2009: Compared to its slightly weaker cask version this is a whole lot better in my eyes.
Clear 500ml bottle with a long life left, I poured it into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ pint vase.
The body was a clear, bright amber. On top sat a good off-white foaming head, this stayed for a good while before fading away leaving lacing on the glass.
Mild toffee aromas hit my nose, followed by a more normal (for UK Bitters) hop and malt smell.
As the beer warmed it got sweeter but it started out with a bitter hop flavour which I enjoyed. Throughout it had a dry aftertatse.
Couldn’t call it full bodied, but it was no lightweight either. A long way from a great Bitter but overall about average for a bottled one.
