Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly "National IPA".

Pours a copper color with a thin white foam head. Aroma of caramel malt with some muted grapefruit. Sweet resiny taste with hop spice and caramel. The hop spice and grapefruit taste is off a pinch. Not in harmony making it an average IPA.

On tap at Battleship. This one pours a light hazy orange in color with a white head. Aroma is of light citrus and pine, with some caramel malts in the background. Flavor is of hops, citrus, malts and pine. Leaves a hoppy and malt finish. This is your typical American IPA.

Bottle at home. Pours brilliantly clear copper with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is pine, resin, and citrus hops with biscuit and straw malt, apple and pear esters . Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, very piney, light fruity esters, supporting malt and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Surprisingly a pretty good beer. The palate is rich, but the flavor doesn't linger. Hints of brown ale in it. Overall, I enjoy it. Would have again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Poured a murky copper color with a three finger frothy white head. Has a light piney hop with a grainy pale malt aroma. Flavor of moderately toasted malts with herbal and piney hops. Lighter creamy body with higher carbonation.

16 oz. draft. Deep golden copper pour, great lacing, white head. Smell is citrus, lemon and piney hops. Taste is a decent malt combined with a balanced hop profile, not too bitter. Very decent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Can't recall from whom. A slightly dusty malt nose with a woody hop. Minty flavor. A bread/toasty malt. This is easy drinking but not an IPA. slightly more pepper as it warms. Not bad. Not great v ---Rated via intercellular device

Bottle. Pours a clear copper body with a large foamy beige head that had very good retention and left some sticky lacing. The nose is just lightly hoppy with some citrusy notes, and the malt character is coming through as being heavy on the crystal malt. A little caramel, but mostly crystal, and I don’t care for that in an IPA. The flavor is even heavier on the crystal malt than I thought it would be. Just a very light citrusy hop note makes it past all the sugary crystal malt. Which leads into the body being overly heavy and sticky with a residual sweetness that lingers on well past any hop bitterness. Overall not what I want in an IPA. Disappointing.
