Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly "National IPA".

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid dark straw with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is sweet and orange marmaladey. Tastes of tangerine, acidic hops, pineapple, and a fairly smooth and complex flavor. This one doesn’t suck.

12 oz. bottle. I got to say first off this was much better than I would have ever guessed. But this should really be marketed as An American Pale Ale or maybe EPA… saying this is an IPA is a stretch. My snifter showed a totally hazy gold that turns an orange color when held to the light. Nose has a very light floral hop note with lots of bread malts. Flavors of caramel malt, sweet citrus, tropical fruits with grapefruit bitterness in the finish. Ok, over this isn’t much better than average. However, I could easily drink several bottles of this. Easy and simple.

UPDATED: SEP 11, 2013 Re-rate. Bottle from Wegmans. Pours hazy orange with a medium sized off white head, decent retention, small lacing. The aroma is primarily citrus with a domination of mango and grapefruit. The taste is lightly bitter with a slight sweetness on the finish.. there is a mango-ish taste to it. Not great, not bad.

Pours hazy gold into a shaker. Full soapy head top hats and recedes leaving craters. Sweet tropical fruit and resin aromas. Medium bodied with sweet bready caramel upfront turning to resin and grapefruit in the lasting toasty finish.

A minor lil brew. Thin and wispy. Faint citrusy notes, light malty notes. No real bitterness to speak of.Thin bodied and lost. How can they still use the name?

I saw this in bottles recently at my local, scratched my head for a second wondering how a now closed brewpub was releasing a bottled version of their IPA. A kind shop owner informed me that it was now being brewed at Otter Creek and it was more of an English style IPA. Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a decent sized white head that quickly drops to a cap. Smells of citrus and earthy hops with some bread and caramel maltiness to provide balance. A hint of mineral water and a touch of orange and lemon round out the nose nicely. The flavor is a bit more focused on the malt than the aroma lead me to believe. Sweet bread, cracker, and caramel malts countered with earthy and citrus hops. Long lingering hop bite at the end of every sip. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a bitter slick mouthfeel. I’m pretty impressed with this bottled version, its been years since I enjoyed any of the beer I’ve had at the brewpub. This is actually a pretty good gateway IPA.

12oz bottle from Julios. Cloudy orange pour with very little head. Pretty average IPA true to the style. Much better than the other Shed beer I tasted recently.

Sixer picked by the wife at Beer Universe, Saugerties. Consumed straight from the bottle while priming the walls of the upstairs landing. Whisper nose of compressed hop. Flat tangy body is low in intensity. Metallic and a bit lusty. Body is meh. Finish is lightly hoppy but lackluster. Moo!

12oz bottle in a shaker. Pours amber with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of some floral and lightly citrusy hops, plus some caramel and pale malts. Flavor the same. Average texture. A random IPA.

A touch of hop aroma and some candied malts. Strangely phenolic. Bright amber orange color. Oft-bitter taste, but mainly starchy malt flavor. Watery body, has dull bite and no zest. A real disappointment, like OC mailed in in for contract. Sad fate for a famed brewpub.
