Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of Pepsican. Thanks, Andy. The aroma is big with cocoa and chocolate, but the rest is somewhat muddled/muted with just a suggestion of roasted malt notes. The body is dark brown, not black, and holds a receding tan head. Sweet chocolate, cocoa and cream makeup the flavor. Very low bitterness. Smooth and drinkable, but falls short of its enticing name.
daknole (568), Plantation, Florida, USA Aug 4, 2008 bottle, thanks to cobra. aroma of roasted chocolate and raisins. flavor is a bit chocolatey, but i am not sure about the donut part. sweet intially then turning to a fairly tart finish. thin to medium body. not bad, not amazing. bitbucket (1528), Kirkland, Washington, USA Aug 3, 2008 Bottle, courtesy glkaiser? I can see why they named this one Chocolate Donut Beer rather than Chocolate Donut Stout. It’s the beer equivalent of reaching for a big and intensely tasty chocolate old-fashioned donut, and getting a Hostess mini donut instead. Nothing here that approximates balance. hellbilly (815), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 14, 2008 bottle by way of StFun... pours a rather thin looking near black shade of brown topped with a small khaki-brown head which fades quickly. smells like those cheap wax coated sleeves of mini chocolate donuts... along with graininess, malt powder, bread/yeast/umami and a little bit of coffee or roasted nuts. the flavor reminds me of eating, yes eating malted chocolate ovaltine (why? you say... i’m lactose intolerant. stop asking questions!). sweet, chocolate-y, grain, cream and an acidic tart finish. lots of roast in the aftertaste as the alcohol begins to warm the belly... quite a bit actually. light to medium bodied... i think the acidity makes it seem a bit watery. foamy carbonation builds creaminess and gets quite soft as the beer warms up. ATLBeerDog (139), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 11, 2008 Pours a root beer like color with a thick ¾ inch caramel colored head. Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and licorice dominate. First sip is super chocolaty, like a dark chocolate Hershey Bar or a Diet Right Chocolate Fudge Soda. Mouthfeel is VERY creamy. The taste truly fits the beer’s name. This is brew is both tasty and unique. ENJOY!
