COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What it’s like: Silver Medal 1998 World Beer Championships. Gold Medal, 1998 National Brew-on-Premises Competition. Stony Man is brewed using traditional English techniques for stouts with oatmeal for smoothness and creaminess. The result is an easy-drinking stout that is a little less bitter than most stouts. Stony Man is a famous landmark along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Who it’s for: Stony Man is popular with anyone who enjoys stouts. Because of its smoothness, it is also a good choice for introducing people to stouts and dark beers in general. The alcohol content by volume is 6 percent.

well...starting with the pour...dark brown with no head but carbonated non-the-less. looks kind of like root beer with out the head...same consistency...watery - poor mouth feel. the aroma was sweet and roasty, almost candy like. the flavor was dark and roasty with coffee being the dominant flavor. slightly bitter finish...a poor stout.

Appearance: very dark brown to black, short tan head that shrinks to a collar, leaving minimal lacing. Aroma: toasted flaked oats, chocolate, cream, some nuts. Taste: creamy hot chocolate, vanilla bean, oatmeal, with a hint of coffee and toasted wood. Finish: smooth, creamy, mellow, with lingering sweetness. Notes: From a pitcher at the brewery. Very nice. A creamy yet drinkable palate with a mid-range body. On the sweet side, but not as sweet as their chocolate donut stout. Comparable to a milk stout, but without the lactic sour tang. Great flavors and aromas.

Sampled on draft at the brewpub. Pours a mud-like hazy brown color with a thin head. Poor head retention and lacing. Faint malty aroma with some chocolate notes. Taste is sweet and malty with notes of chocolate and oats and a tart finish. Thin-medium bodied.

bottle from cobra, thanks! Not quite a black pour and a big light tan head. Aroma is very faint with some chocolate and toasted malt. Flavor is very similar to their choc donut stout. A bit tart, reminds me of a very rich brown beer. some chocolate and some nuances of nuts come through. not great, but I think a tad underrated in my opinion.

Poured a dark mahogany color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla, cocoa, and light smoke. Taste was roasty, a bit of chocolate, and smoke, with light vanilla bean. Not quite as creamy as the Oak Barrel Stout...

Thanks to hopdog. Pours a deep brown with amber notes and a very small bubbly off white head. Aroma of light chocolate, caramel, toffee and some nuts. Flavor of roasted malt, earthy, caramel and some nuts.

12oz bottle. Pours a very dark, cola-brown color; light tan head with solid retention and medium-bubbled lacing. Light aroma, with roasted malts and dark chocolate upfront; a touch of oily smokiness, perhaps. Medium mouthfeel: average carbonation; not watery, but certainly light-bodied stout: roasted malts and dark chocolate; a touch of char and caramel; not bad at all, really, and perhaps suggestive that recent batches have gotten better. A very drinkable, reasonably tasty stout. Medium finish, showing roasted malts, bread, and some doughy / toastiness.

IMPROPERLY POURED! They used straight co2 instead of "beergas" Nitrogen/Co2 mix, so no frothy head like I prefer with a stout. Not much aroma, nice deep dark color. Too carbonated due to straight co2 mixture which took away from the flavor. I would like to retry this beer when I return with the proper pour.

Bottle; poured a dark brown with light brown head. Aroma was good with chocolate, roasted malt, coffee; slight sweetness and hops. A lot of carbonation evident and some acidity. Flavor was very enjoyable; chocolate, vanilla, caramel, molasses. Was presently surprised.
