Cask: Special - JDW Spring festival, 2010
Greg Hall has travelled to Shepherd Neame Brewery, in Kent, to re-create this award-winning beer, based on the traditional English bitter style, especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. It is deep golden in colour and combines a fruity, hop aroma with rich malt flavour, resulting in a perfectly balanced and immensely drinkable beer. Hops used: Styrian Goldings.

Hand pulled at the Billiard Hall, West Bromwich. First impression is good: restrained hop feel. Subsequent sips not quite so good: plain malt bitterness. Overall though, I liked it. The hops keep reemerging in a subtle way and it was crisp. A good Bitter, but not a world beater.

Cask conditioned handpump Last Plantaganet Leicester. An amber coloured beer with a tightish whitish head. Good fruity hops in the aroma with sweet berry like notes. Fairly jammy in the mouth. Decent hops and nice supporting malts. Hints of sweetness. Reasonable length and pretty tasty.

SilkTork (5542) - Southampton, United Kingdom, Hampshire, ENGLAND - APR 15, 2010
JDW Spring fest - Rochester. Sheps EKG hop character - good nettle fresh bite. Malt has a slight toffee note, but is otherwise unremarkable. More like MasterBrew than Spitfire, but not as good as either.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Copper with white head. Once I was over the sweet, sherbety strawberry fruity notes it actually tasted quite reasonable, there is a toffee caramel note with a good malty depth and a little earthy. It was ok.

Cask at the Standing Order (JDW), Stevenage. Copper in colour with a ring of white head; odd ginger aroma; dry peppery ginger flavour; the finish is gently bitter with herbal hops.

leaparsons (9851) - Wigston, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - APR 13, 2010
Cask, Last Plantagenet, Leicester. Hazy amber with a speckled head. Aromas are brown sugar with herbal notes and spices. Woody with peach fruitiness and grapefruit. Some hints of vinegar. Flavours are dry and woody with spices. Some sweet crystalised fruit dried fruit. Very peppery on the palate. Still not great.

DruncanVeasey (8012) - NUNEATON, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - APR 13, 2010
The Felix Holt, Nuneaton. Bright, attractive chestnut with orange tints; white slick, lace specks. Mandarin cheesecake, musky hop, Turkish Delight hints on snout if you really inhale. Feels like a tired, date-expired bottled US beer; flat and washed-out, with the hop promise hinted at in the aroma surrendering to caramel and cardboard. A shame. Some drying and floral hops leaking out but overpowered by toffee popcorn. I don’t mind it, but it feels empty like a cup of tea made with a reused teabag.

Fin (9596) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - APR 13, 2010
Cask at The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester, Oxon 10-04-10 in company of Craig and family and Loz of course. Pours amber with a small white head. Got to be honest I was bitterly dissapointed with this expectation was hig but reality was that it was pretty poor, in its defecnce it was getting towards the end of the cask so I was told, but still it had such little taste, no real bite, the fruitiness that was there was really shallow, in fact it was like everything in the aroma and flavour department had been turned down to zero, hoppy profile was lacking, aroma was pretty non-existent apart for a vague chemical taint (but to be fair that could have been a dishwashered glass) poor. A5 A3 F4 P3 Ov9 2.4

sm89walt (1947) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - APR 12, 2010
Cask - West Gate Inn (JDW), Canterbury. Poured a deep copper colour with a small though lasting creamy beige head leaving a thick lacing. Hops are good but seem unrefined and herbal with metallic edge, backed by sweet caramel notes on the nose. Again, on the tongue the hops seemed a bit raw; dry and grassy in terms of bitterness, mixed with caramel and finishing with some toasted tones. Light to medium in body, low carbonation with a mid-length finish.
