COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
"Kentish Strong Ale".
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 10.5% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame’s tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
Only local hops and malted barley and water drawn from our artesian well are used to brew 1698 Bottle Conditioned Kentish Strong Ale. Hops are added three times, hence it is "thrice hopped".

Clear amber, bubbly. Decent rocky white head. Caramel malt and hops. Initial dryness stays with a hoppy aftertaste which lingers. Maybe a touch too carbonated and thin. Disappointing, fairly bland.

02.09.2011. 0,33l Bottle. Systembolaget Strömstad. Golden colour with white head. Aroma is smooth malty with notes of sweetness and somekind of caramel. Moderate bitterness. Strong alcohol gives good firm body. Its the malts that gives this beer the very good flavours. Very nice and warm ale.

Amber pour with a touch of light fruit. Fruity and a little bit sweet with some strong booziness. There is a little touch of pepper with some soft sweetness. There is a little bit of estery character. A fairly typical ESA.
