Bottle conditioned.
"Kentish Strong Ale".
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 10.5% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame’s tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
Only local hops and malted barley and water drawn from our artesian well are used to brew 1698 Bottle Conditioned Kentish Strong Ale. Hops are added three times, hence it is "thrice hopped".

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2015 Bottle, 0.5L. Pours red/copper with small white head leaving some lacing. Aroma is lightly fruity, ester-like, watermelon and generally scents of pale lager. Taste is medium bitter with some light sourness. Carbonation is too high and disturbs the taste. Some malts in the aftertaste. Generally, a dissapointment.

1698 jest piwem o ładnej prezencji. Jest to trunek przejrzysty o jasno bursztynowej barwie, z delikatną pianą, o wyglądzie i trwałości adekwatnej do stylu w którym został on uwarzony. Aromat mamy chwilowo estrowy.

Dark amber colour. Pours well. Very hoppy aroma and a massive hoppy hit. Quite fizzy. And a lingering aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Roasted coffee aroma. Pours bronze in colour with frothy head. Nutty, coffee flavour with some bitter notes. Medium body with some bitterness in the finish.

Not one to ring the bells about, I found d it hoppy with this taste over powering anything else. Don’t think I would rush out and buy more but would be happy to drink if offers another. Drinking the bottled beer at 6.5?

500ml bottle from Tesco supermarket, Glasgow (Ł2.19):
Definitely one of the better Shepherd Neame beers I’ve tried, this one is likely the pick of the eight I’ve now tried. The beer was quite sweet with a good combination of caramel, toffee and sugars without seemingly sickeningly sweet. It’s by no means a classic beer but it was a nice one to sip away at on a cold winters night.

Drinkable, but strength is not complemented by taste. Ok, but would not buy again (if I remember).

500ml bottle from Tesco. Pours red brown with off white head. Started off quite well, a sweet strong ale with a hint of caramel. Fell over badly with a harsh alcohol hit after a few sips. Hard work.
