Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

Bottle (500ml). Poured a chestnut brown (deep copper?) with a small, dense, rocky off-white head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of roasted caramel malts with sweet toffee, cooked nuts, blackberries, some earth/wood notes and suggestions of ripe bananas. Flavor was a good (dirty) hop bitterness with dates (as well as other dried mixed fruits), roasted toffee malts, chewy caramel, tart black berries, some sappy/woody notes, faint notes of marmalade and an dry earthy finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a very dry (almost resin-like) mouthfeel, mildy syrupy texture (more chewy) and a great lasting finish. My favorite from Shepherd Neame.

Aroma is overall sweet with traces of cereal, banana and grain.. The beer looks nice with a clear amber body, with small bubbles and medium particles. The flavor is flowery, slightly bitter, sweet but too thin. The palate is watery and sticky.

On tap (25 cl) @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad. Very good Shepherd Neame-brew, I was surprised. Aroma of dried fruits + sweet malt & caramel. Taste is moastly of malt, dried fruit, caramel and almond with a slight note of warming alcohol. Good!

Bottle transparent (white), 500 ml
Appearance: Pours orangy - amber body colour with many sediments of yeasty origin floating in the body texture, carbonation of body is medium, head is initially medium, slowly decreasing to small, off - white, cappuccino like in colour, lacing is visible on tha wall of the glass. Sediments are falling down to the glass - bottom.
Aroma: Fruity sweet malty aroma dominating over the earthy hoppyness, slightly herbal hoppy nose, very gentle notes of red fruits but slightly too weak to specify what kind of fruits it contains.
Flavour: Tangy sweet maltyness at front, alcohol is moderate and is quite well felt, red fruits become present in the retronasal aroma, caramel, touch of white bread, milk chockolate, gentle notes of mead, noble hops earth hidden under sweetness, carbonation is felt quite strongly on palate. Finish feel is average to long.
Palate: Body is medium, texture is wattery and slightly seems smooth, carbonation on palate is medium, finish feel is moderate alcoholic and neutral in other aspects for slight spicyness.
