Launched 1958.
Bishops Finger takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s. It is one of the UK’s oldest bottled beers, brewed since 1958.
Bishops Finger holds EU Protected Geographical Indication, recognising its unique provenance. Uniquely, it is brewed to a charter which states it can only be brewed by the head brewer on a Friday and that it must be brewed using 100% natural ingredients, Kentish hops and barley, and the brewery’s own artesian mineral water.

Bottle 500 ml. Roasted malts, caramel aroma. Strong malty taste, not my style again, but I appreciate it’s merits.

Bottle, 0.50l, shared with Gregor. Pours clear deep amber color with thin creamy off-white head, poor lacing and average sparkling appearance. Aroma of caramel, grass and some dust. Taste starts with light sweet caramel and mild toasted malt, follows bready, grassy and a bit papery with dry mouthfeel and moderate bitter finish. Light to medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Seemed very average to me...

Nut brown color with big white head. Aroma is roasty, little caramel and malt, fresh and fruity. Taste is roasty with a good malt body. Spicey and earthy hop notes. Finish is hoppy, bitter, more dry than malty. Carbonation is lively, maybe little bit too high for english ESB. Good beer.

Towey1989 (1575) - Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire, ENGLAND - OCT 7, 2015
Bottle. Pours a clear nut brown colour with a foamy white head. Aroma of caramel, red berries, subtle orange, slight nuts and spicy, earthy hops. Taste is quite fruity of caramel, light roasted malts, red berries, slight nuts and spicy, earthy hops. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A slightly roasted, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. A quintessential British ESB, malty, fruity and bitter. Simple and average overall but well balanced.
