Bottle and can: Filtered.
Launched 1958.
Bishops Finger takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s. It is one of the UK’s oldest bottled beers, brewed since 1958.
Bishops Finger holds EU Protected Geographical Indication, recognising its unique provenance. Uniquely, it is brewed to a charter which states it can only be brewed by the head brewer on a Friday and that it must be brewed using 100% natural ingredients, Kentish hops and barley, and the brewery’s own artesian mineral water.

Clear, brown, minimal head, just looks kind of flat and sad in the glass. Medium body, slick feel, rather fizzy. Tastes nice though, clean, resinous hops, good balance with the malt, nice long finish but slightly bitter. Spoiled by the fizziness for me.

500ml bottle. Clear, dark brown/amber colour with a generous smooth off-white head, which unfortunately doesn’t last. Aroma is fruity malt and bitter hops. Flavour is also fruity malt, quite bitter, but also a slight metallic taste to it, otherwise quite nice though not the usual style I’d go for.

Quite nice overall, but with one big issue: it’s too sour - almost like white wine!

Robe brune à ambrée, mousse peu abondante. Nez sur les fruits secs, le houblon, le foin. Bouche légère, souple, fruitée, un peu amère mais un ensemble courte et sans grand intérêt.

Pours clear chestnut. Honeyed, slightly roasted and nutty aromas with a hint of sage and aniseed. Malty and somewhat fruity scents with crème anglaise as it warms up. Light to medium bodied palate, thankfully not at all as sweet as the bouquet could lead you to believe, roasted malty backbone and ends with a nice little touch of bitterness.

Poured from a can, it shows up a beatiful crystal clear, dark amber to red-orange coloured beer, one-finger off-white to tan head, nice rolling carbonation and lacing. Aroma is a well balanced blend of malts and hops, and a quite sweet caramel note. Silky smooth mouthfeel, low carbonation, sweet. Flavour is roasted and malty with a distinct taste of caramel. Pleasant, sessionable Bitter.

Barwa kasztanowa, piana znikoma, dość szybko opada. W aromacie lekka paloność i toffi. W smaku gorzka czekolada, przyjemna goryczka. Smaczne ale ciut wodniste i trochę puste.

Strong sweet fruity aroma with an earthy taste and a medium long bitter aftertaste. It has a nice "chestnutty" color and a good palate sensation.

Pours a dark amber color, topped with a small off-white head, not really lasting. Very vague aroma, just a little bit of caramel malt and some grass. Taste is medium bitter, grassy with a bit of sweet feel. A bit metallic in the aftertaste. Nothing special.

Rated from old notes. A rich full-bodied Kentish ale. Assertive but not overpowering. A pleasant sipping companion, this is one of the better of British brews.

Appearance: clear, deep amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma: roasty with a hint of caramel. Taste: a pleasant roasty flavour with a good malt body. Hops give of a moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel: low carbonation with a medium body. Overall: really enjoyed this one and would happily drink it again.
