A pale, golden, brilliantly bright, hoppy ale, brewed with 100% pale malt and the choicest East Kent Golding hops. This was a hugely popular ale in its day and has now risen Phoenix-like for the modern drinker to enjoy.
There is a legend at Shepherd Neame that Brilliant Ale was inspired by the vision of the bright early morning sun sending its golden shafts of light through the brewhouse window and onto the oak mash tun, inspiring the brewing team to brew a beer that echoed these hues. Historically this recipe was formulated with 100% pale malt and was bittered by the brewery’s signature East Kent Goldings hops, resulting in a golden, brilliantly bright, hoppy ale which has risen Phoenix-like from the ashes of time for the modern drinker to enjoy.

Brilliant white head, straw like colour, very carbonated. Bitter smell and taste, hint of citrus. It's very nice, nothing more though. Doesn't taste like a 5.6%. Drinkable.

Clear bright yellow, small white foam ring remaining. Some apricot in aroma, not very English in taste. Light bitter, some sweetness. (Arnhem 201504)

Very refreshing and easy-going. Light golden palate, but after the sip there appears lack of character and signature. The sweetness rescues the situation, though.

500ml bottle - Was quite sceptical about this one having just had another Shep Neame minutes earlier, but this came out okay. Clear gold, foamy white head. Solid hoppy aroma, taste bitter-sweet with a decent syrupy palate. Quite enjoyable in the end. Not "Brilliant", but okay.

Bottle from SuperAlko in Tallinn (€ 2.55). BB Apr 2015 - almost broke my neck searching for it. Clear golden colour with a big light creamy hat and good lacing. Aroma is nice crisp caramel malt, but not overly sweet, gets grassy and dank as the initial caramel draws back. Taste is considerably malty and caramelly sweet… herbal hops… and slightly skunky to be honest… It’s clearly not fresh. Faint notes of autumn fruits. Finishes papery and kinda metallic. Crisp carbonation, body light to medium. Rating it higher than I should right now because I’ve had way fresher bottles that I’ve enjoyed much more.

Bottle, 5.6%. Light caramelly aroma with a hint of floral hops. Clear golden/copper colour. Small frothy chalk white head. The flavour is dusty with the characteristically sweetish EKG note. Late bitterness, slightly tannic.
