There’s a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

500ml bottle - The Bishops Finger, Canterbury. A clear, deep chestnut coloured beer with a dense, lasting white head with a bit of lacework. House yeast aromas, lots of caramel sweetness and some dry toastiness on the nose. Very sweet toffee flavours, a bit cakey perhaps with pasteurised malt notes & a backing fruitiness. Finishes with a low, dry bitterness. Medium body, fairly warming on the palate with medium carbonation & a short finish. Not really sure what makes this a Christmas ale but it was alright.

Bottle at home. What is Christmassy about this? Nice enough fairly standard English ale. Bit of toffee, caramel, hint of figs, dates. Bitter finish, fairly thin mouthfeel. Not bad.

Clear medium amber orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, straw, burnt caramel, toffee, wood - tobacco notes, light to moderate hoppy, orange. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, burnt caramel bitter, dried fruit. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100222]

Vintage 2009. Bottle. A - Light amber and orange color. Large, fluffy white head with decent retention, and a little lacing left. S - Good amount of citrus and floral smell. A little malt and hint of spices. T - Decent amount of bread and caramel malts. Well balanced with citrus and floral hops. Some bitterness, but not a lot. A little bit of spice (cinnamon and nutmeg as well as others) but not as much as I expected from a Christmas beer. M - Medium body with a decent amount of carbonation. Fizzy. D - Decent drinkability. Well balanced between malts and the citrus/spice. Notes: Not entirely what I was expecting from a winter warmer that has Christmas in the name, but not bad. A little too thin and not a lot of flavor, but well balanced and the flavors compliment each other.

Clear amber with a minimal off white head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel and some toffee and nuts. Flavor is light bitter and medium sweet without anything interesting going on. Quite boring.

First rating: Medium offwhite head. Brown body. Sugary caramelly nutty aroma. Sweet-dry nutty wooden caramel taste with cinnamon notes. Mid-bodied. Dry alcoholic toffee metal aftertaste. Very nice. (0.5l bottle, Systembolaget, Charlottenberg.) 6,4,6,3,13=3.2

Second rating: Medium beige head. Deep brown body. Perfumy fruity raisiny aroma with cocos notes. Sweetish perfumy fruity candy taste with spicy cocos notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish fruity spicy perfumy aftertaste with herbal vanilla notes. Too perfumy for me. Almost tastes artificial. (0.5l bottle, from Systembolaget, Torp.) 6,4,6,3,12=3.1

It is a nice golden brown beer with hops and mild sweetness with caramel, but seems unfortunately there was smell of vinegar, not as good a beer I do not need to drink again.
