There’s a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

Bottle. Copper with an off-white head that disappears quickly. Aroma: grassy hops, fruits, perhaps apples and oranges. Taste: candied apples, some licorice, a bit metallic in taste, sweet and malty with a low bitterness. Medium-bodied and smooth. Sweet, candyish and pretty nice.

Pours with a beautiful clear deep ruby amber colour with a fluffy light tanned head leaving some lacing. Good carbonation. Aroma of caramel, malts, vanilla and fruits with notes of spicyness. Lean and sweet fruity mouthfeel. Flavor is fruity, perry, sweet, hoppy and a bit acidy. Acidy fruity palate. Finishes tart hoppy and sweet.

Bottle from Co-op probably. Hmmm, didn’t like this too much. Sweet, sickly malts and a nasty unbalanced sourness. Not easy to drink, and has no alcohol warmth, which would have saved it’s bacon a little.

bread, caramel, floral, dough, bubblegum, vanilla, alcohol, amber, clear, white foam, frothy, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, salty, light body, slick feel, soft carbonation, Ganska tråkig i år. God smak, men för lite smak. 7% abv känns inte alls i smaken. Hade förvätat mig en bättre punch av ölet. Lite besviken. Doften är bätre än smaken.

UPDATED: NOV 28, 2013 Bottle @ home. 27/11-13.
App: Clear leathery amber, short off white head, almost no lacings.
Aroma: Sweet malty with toffee, dried apricots, candied oranges, burnt almonds, vanilla, leather/tobacco and sweet black tea.
Taste: Sweet malty with honey, fudge, oranges, dried apricot and apples. Balanced tea-like bitterness with peppery alcohol in the end and, like the label says, a nice vanilla and almondy Armgnac note in the aftertaste.
Palate: Medium to slight bigger body with soft carbonation and a oily slick texture.
Overall: A simple classic english strong ale without any typical christmas spices. It gets a nice touch with the armagnac note in the aftertaste.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear copper with a medium head. Good fruity nose. Raisins and apples flavours. Not extremely exciting, but well-made.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with an off-white head. Sweet, caramel, toffee, dried fruits, spicy & earthy hops, nuts, bitter oranges, a bit of both wood and metal (that I often find in Shepherd Neame´s beers). Decent.

It’s dark amber with a huge, creamy head and the typical Shepherd Neame hoppy aroma/flavour with notes of fruit and malt. The flavour is sweet with notes of fruit, caramel, alcohol, and the finish is dry with a light bitterness. IMO the alcohol is a bit too dominating.

500ml bottle - The Bishops Finger, Canterbury. A clear, deep chestnut coloured beer with a dense, lasting white head with a bit of lacework. House yeast aromas, lots of caramel sweetness and some dry toastiness on the nose. Very sweet toffee flavours, a bit cakey perhaps with pasteurised malt notes & a backing fruitiness. Finishes with a low, dry bitterness. Medium body, fairly warming on the palate with medium carbonation & a short finish. Not really sure what makes this a Christmas ale but it was alright.

Bottle. Medium off-white head, copper body. Honey, peas, caramel, fruits, spice. Sweet, bitter notes. Nice dry finish.Moderate carbonation, a little syrupy, viscous mouthfeel. Warming on the palate. Good, but not especially Christmassy.
