Thereís a spicy signature to this incredibly complex cockle-warming winter ale. The nose is reminiscent of raisins, dates and molasses while the palate is vinous with tannin-like notes of leather, vanilla, apricots and a hint of rustic Armagnac on the finish. An awesome after-dinner drop.

Bottle from Sainsburys supermarket last year. An amber coloured pour with slight head. Fruity, festive aroma. Orange marmalade taste, hops, Christmas cake spice. Surprisingly drinkable. I am not a big fan of Shepherd Neame but this one is quite moreish. Rather good.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with okay head. Boring aroma, but flavor of fruity hops, citrus and slightly of burnt hops, strong bitter alcohol finish

0,5 L bottle from Systembolaget, Charlottenberg. A low offwhite head quickly shrinking to thin layer of foam. Body is well carbonated, orangey hued, dark copper, with brilliant clarity. Spicy hops up front, followed by a soft, nutty malt aroma, and a scent of burnt sugar/caramel. Taste clean malty, fairly dry, with pepper and caramel notes. Some well prononced spicy and earthy hops in the backbone. Notes of dark dried fruits. Well-bodied and oily in the mouth. Finish is malty, with a certain alcohol warmth, and a fine, lingering bitterness. Well-made and moreish.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2011 500 ml bottle. Finland.
Clear amber colour with small off-white head. Fruity and floral hops, some sweetness and malt in aroma. Sugary, nutty and malty flavour with hints of floral hops. Very similar to other Shepherd Neame brews. Thereís nothing very xmassy in this except itís much stronger (7%) than average SN ale.

Bottle, from Co-op in Mablethorpe. Copper gold, lasting fluffy white head and moderate condition. Good initial peppery hop resin with a developing toffee, caramel and vanilla woodiness in the nose, Full and soft in the mouth with a solid spirity vanilla earthiness, some bitter orange notes and a gentle malty sweetness, lingering hop bitterness and spirity retronasal alcohol in the finish.

500 ml bottle. Copper color, frothy off-white head. Slightly alcoholic flavor with spices, notable ginger. Medium-full body, medium carbonation. Ok.

Bottle. Lovely amber glow. Fruit, spices, sweet malt. The spices largely balance the sweetness. It might be that it is cheating to add the crystallised fruit instead of letting the yeast and hops do the trick, but this works quite well.

olsvammel (4686) - ÷rebro, SWEDEN - NOV 23, 2009
UPDATED: DEC 30, 2011 It poured a dark golden liquid with a medium sized white foam. It had an odd smell of sawdust, wood, nuts and what I think is nutmeg. Fairly smooth mouthfeel with just a bit of stingyness. Dry with a ligth body and low bitterness. Watery taste of caramell, malt and butter with an alcoholic finnish. Just as with Fullers this one had to much butter. I ended up pouring it out.

UPDATED: AUG 4, 2010 Bottle dated 2009. Vegetal aroma with a lot of metal. The same effect can be achieved by putting your head into a dirty dishwasher. Donít know why the aroma simply didnít appeal to me: I rather liked the taste, which was sweet and toasty like an overdone muffin, and the finish which was satisfyingly bitter.
