9 May 2011, bottle. black w/ frothy tan head. burnt coffee and oatmeal aromas. full body and fizzy. acidic burnt coffee taste. decent for a shepherd neame beer but i’m reminded how they all taste relatively the same.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
A good looking very dark brown stout, with a big head though not aggressively carbonated. Faintly metallic aroma mingles with coffee. Strongly chocolatey on first taste giving way to a creamy malt sweetness. Not as roasty as some stouts, though more bitter than expected, hopped with East Kent Goldings.Overall a well balanced beer but nothing stand out about it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 ml bottle. Deep dark reddish brown colour, medium-sized beige head. Sweetish aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and dark fruit. The flavour is roasted malty, slightly sour, with coffee and chocolate, and a lingering bitter finish. For a beer with just 4 % alcohol by volume, this is very tasty.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
I’ve never been a fan of Shepherd Neame’s bottled beers, but the cask ones have proven their worth. this is a 500ml bottle. The liquid is of a dark brown/black colour. Very firm appearance, head looks soft and a bit creamy, doesn’t disappear. Surprisingly good looking. Aromas are quite clear and easy with roasted malt, coffee, caramel, chocolate, bread, vanilla and a bit of fruit and earth. The taste is bitter and sour but in a very gentle way, although not undermined. this brings out the roasted malty tastes well, but i expected more of the aromas to fuse into this also. the body is medium with an oily and slightly creamy texture. low carbonation works nicely with the style naturally. a bitter malty finish stays for a rather long time to entertain the mouth. much better than the bottle version of spitfire.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle.
Pours a dark brown colour with a small white head. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Flavour of roasted malts, some hops, coffee, milk chocolate, spices and mild nuts. Just great. Medium bodied with a slick mouthfeel and a dry roasty finish with chocolate. Very well crafted for a 4% dry stout.

Bottled 500ml (K-Isolinna, BBE 02/2012)
Dark brown-ruby color, good creamy brown head. Cocoa and toasted malts in the aroma. Quite light body. Front is toasted malty with cold coffee and some chocolate. Then finish has quite decent amount of hops. Short toasted-bitter aftertaste. Feels a bit empty although is quite nicely hopped.

Bottled (from K Citymarket Kivihaka, Vaasa). Very deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized beige head, that leaves nice lace. Aroma is beautiful toffee, roasted notes, mild dark fruityness as well as some coffee. Flavour is roasted malts, some sweet dark fruityness, chocolate, coffee and also some quite bittery notes. Quite strong coffeeish and chocolaty notes in the finish.

This beats Guinness hands down, sorry Irish folk, nice roasted taste and not too creamy or thin either, Shepherd Neame should produce this all the time. NB mine was a bottled version at 4%abv
