Bottle at home to see is 2014 with the missus and BBC1. colour is extremely dark brown and almost opaque. Gorgeous nose of chili chocolate, cherry and burnt espresso. Taste is bitter and dry, like drinking pure thirst. An excellent stout which goes some way to restore my faith in Shepherd Neame.

500ml Bottle from Tesco (£2.39):
Dark roasted malts and barely coming through initially with the usual light coffee aroma on top. There is a milk chocolatey sweetness around the middle with some cocoa and sugar plus a little grain. Some subtle hops rounded things off but the malts really came through strongest here.
Dark mahogany brown with a thin lacing over the top that still covers the surface and is a light brown to tan colour, this is down from the initial thumb sized and bubbly one.
Sweeter than the nose suggested but still not an in-your-face sweetness, there was some roasted barely and malts with plenty of chocolate and a creamy flavour coming through. I could detect some grain and coffee, with some liquorice & a bitter finish.
Medium bodied and quite chewy with a very dry and semi-bitter finish. There was some sweetness from the chocolate and sugars as well as a little spice too and the carbonation was a little on the high side.

A pretty standard stout , the flavours were much as I had expected going in with a nice balance between the darker malts and the roasted flavours but the palate was a little harsh and the carbonation also seemed off meaning the beer wasn’t as smooth or as easy to drink as I would have liked.

Mørkebrun/Svart med medium høyde på det luftige lysebrune skummet. Aroma av mørk (brent) malt, mild sjokolade og noe kaffe. Smaken er samme, med en mild bitterhet. Nokså tørr.

Bottle 500 ml from Amstein - St Légier (CH). Black ebony beer, 1/2 inch of tan head which sticks to the glass. Roasted aromas, torrefaction, ashes-dust, dark chocolate and black coffee. Taste of roasted malt, toast, licorice, rather thin, but strong and dry. A little dusty texture. Bitterness of burnt and in finale notes of grassy hop.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
