This magnificent example of a classic double stout delivers a velvety-smooth palate of dry, burnt flavours - complemented by roast, cocoa and coffee notes. Black, creamy and delicious; it is a Shepherd Neame masterpiece.

Nice black stout with small head. Sweet malty smell. Bitter long-lasting aftertaste. Too much iron, tested on skin. What a shame!

500 ml bottle. Clear, dark brown almost black body with a small beige head. Pleasant aroma of dark, moderate roasted malt, hint of coffee, liquorice and some dry fruit. Flavor is sweet, moderate roasted dark malt, some bitterness and a hint of coffee. Well balanced body and average in aftertaste. A nice, classic dry stout.

500ml bottle from Tallin, dark coffee colour, medium frothy mostly vanishing light brown head, fair lacing. Roasty aroma of plums, chocolate, coffee and herbs. Taste is initially moderately bitter with a bit of sweetness and acidity, turning into a long bitter finish with a slightly acetic and burnt feel. Medium body, somewhere between oily and watery texture, lively carbonation. Not a bad dark beer, could’ve had a bit more depth in aroma and the body felt quite light for the style.

Poured a very dark red, thin tan coloured head. Not too much aroma but very good flavour. Medium bitterness, coffee, and roasty. Thinnish mouthfeel with light carbonation. Very sessionable.

Bottle. It pours a clear-looking dark brown body under a dense, finger thick beige head. The aroma is roasted, with some caramel notes and dried fruits. A bit one dimensional perhaps, but sure good. There’s a lightly burnt note in the flavor, with chocolate and coffee, some caramel and dried fruits. It’s full-bodied and dry with a nice carbonation. Lasting roasted finish with chocolate and coffee. A tasteful and pleasant one indeed. 140207

Quite roasted malty, thou definitely cant call this “double stout”, pleasant choco, bit bread, weird fruity, some hops. Sweet with bittersweet finish. Really not bad, but too watery for me. I am starting to think, that I am not fan of dry stouts.. Quite unpleasant dry roasted finish

Pleasant burnt malt taste with coffee coming through but it felt a bit weak in the palate. Fine but slightly unsatisfying and surprised to see it rated so highly.

Bottle from Waitrose. Black body with a thin beige head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate cake, blackcurrants and burnt toast. Lovely flavour of fig, burnt wood and ash. Medium body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Soft fizz. Rich and tasty, but a bit on the thin side.

This was not bad. Nice roasted malt, bit too carbonated and a hint too much alcohol on the initial hit. Still, nice.
