This magnificent example of a classic double stout delivers a velvety-smooth palate of dry, burnt flavours - complemented by roast, cocoa and coffee notes. Black, creamy and delicious; it is a Shepherd Neame masterpiece.

Bottle 26th Jan 14. Pours in an almost viscous way, with a yeasty looking head giving way to a wonderful espresso-like settle. A slightly underwhelming aroma but a fantastically complex and varied taste, with highly bitter, malty notes including coffee and nuts at different stages. The main palate of flavour isn’t too lingering, which is good for a bear this bold. Soft-flat level fizziness is also welcome, and there’s an oily-creamy feeling that hangs around which is lovely just before bed.

Small yellow cap. A bit watery taste (maybe because I’m drinking it just after IPA), but interesting bitterness on the first half of tongue, small aftertaste - on the middle.

A good stout, without the thickness of the guiness. Much easier to drink and good chocolate and roasted flavours.

Bouteille 50cl, no BB date.
