This magnificent example of a classic double stout delivers a velvety-smooth palate of dry, burnt flavours - complemented by roast, cocoa and coffee notes. Black, creamy and delicious; it is a Shepherd Neame masterpiece.

500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Retro label. I do like the retro beers that some of the older breweries are doing. They are not authentic recreations - these are older recipes brewed on modern equipment, with modern ingredients and yeasts, and in a modern style, but I like the idea. This, of course, doesn’t taste any different from any modern stout brewed at around this strength. The thing with stouts is that like espresso coffee, the ingredients and recipe tend to make beers that don’t leave much room for individuality or character. This is a typical roasted malts dark beer. All the flavours and mouthfeel that you’d expect are here - like drinking raspberry jam on burnt toast. Lovely.

Black color. Aromas of coffee and chocolate. Balanced flavor, but closer to the bitter end. Tastes of coffee, ash, dark chocolate, and an herbal hop flavor that builds over time. Very nice stout.

Bottle from Honza Lucky Bastard, many thanks. Very dark brown color with medium beige head. Coffee aroma with dark chocolate, caramel, light plums. Taste, strong coffee, over roasted, light plums. Not very drinkable beer.

Bottle (500ml, heavy glassed). Matt black beer with a rocky and lasting latte-coloured head. Nose has all the required elements of a decent stout (roasty malts, dark chocolate, espresso coffee) with some earthy dry English hops. Palate is deliciously smooth and creamy with a medium body and soft carbonation. Flavour is roasted malts with a light bitterness and a dry hop finish. A touch of ash in there as well. Nice one.

500ml bottle into pint glass. Dark opaque beer (backlit, it is actually deep mahogany) with frothy tan-coloured head. Aroma of iced coffee, chocolate and cocoa. Full-bodied and bitter in the mouth. The finish is much more coffee-bitter. Touches of burnt wood and aspirin late on. A very adult type of stout, good for winter nights and log fires.

Bottle bbe 10/2016. Aroma buttery. Taste strange combination of butter, fruity sourness and acrid roasted malt. Finishes with strong minty bitterness and some coffee, a bit unbalanced. Don't really know if I like it or not. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

50cl Bottle from REWE Stenten. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of ash, roast, chocolate, some caramel, hint of aspartame. Flavour is light sweet, chocolate, roast, very ashy, dry, bitter, light caramel, bitter finish, some coffee. Light bodied. Decent.

Distinctive coffee aroma and dissipating head greet with the pour. Relatively thin mouth feel and little follow through on the coffee. Hints of choc in the finish.

Bottle from Damian. Serious oxidized-like washing cloth aroma and flavour severely impairs the beer for me. Otherwise it is pretty dry and intensely roasty, but lacking some malty complexity. This is only plain ashy roast.
