This magnificent example of a classic double stout delivers a velvety-smooth palate of dry, burnt flavours - complemented by roast, cocoa and coffee notes. Black, creamy and delicious; it is a Shepherd Neame masterpiece.

500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Retro label. I do like the retro beers that some of the older breweries are doing. They are not authentic recreations - these are older recipes brewed on modern equipment, with modern ingredients and yeasts, and in a modern style, but I like the idea. This, of course, doesn’t taste any different from any modern stout brewed at around this strength. The thing with stouts is that like espresso coffee, the ingredients and recipe tend to make beers that don’t leave much room for individuality or character. This is a typical roasted malts dark beer. All the flavours and mouthfeel that you’d expect are here - like drinking raspberry jam on burnt toast. Lovely.

bottle from superbrugsen enghavevej. pitch dark, smooth brown head. malty aroma, some roasted malts, also an almost sourish note, that probably is from just a lot of malts. very english, but also kind of nice aroma. flavor is chocolate, roasted malts, almost sour notes, not much hops, but a very dry stout. quite nice. Better than guinness.

Bottle from Nõmme Comarket in Tallinn (€ 3,11) in Sept 2014. Pours black with some mahagony round the edges; head is very dense, tan, retains and laces well. It has a very good, roasty chocolate and cocoa aroma, a bit smoky, with some nice bitter hops as well. Tastes sugary sweet and chocolaty, roasty and bitter. Body’s quite light though still around medium, carbonation low, palate thick and a bit oily. Dry, roasty, slightly bitter finish. Overall a very decent sweet and dry one.

Stout noire avec une teinte brune. Belle mousse marron claire persistante. Carbonation moyenne-faible. Arôme prédominant de café, puis de toastage. Cacao peut-être aussi... En bouche très bien balancée et légèrement crémeuse, riche en café, toastage puis caramel et cacao. Fin de bouche sèche. Puissante stout, et aromatique. Magnifique stout

Black, strong light brown head. Coffee and maybe some cocoa on the nose - lovely. Definite roasted malt, coffee and some hints of caramel, with and underlying layer of bitter loveliness. Nice roasty-bitter finish. Excellent.

Barwa: czarna, nieprzejrzysta. Całkiem nieźle zbalansowane, do ideału niewiele brakuje.

McTapps (4083) - Ruhrcity, North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - AUG 18, 2014
Bottle bought at Tesco in Eastbourne. The stout pours out in a deep black colour with low steady head and medium body. Aroma of coffee and torf. Taste of light sour malt, torf, sour mash, roasted coffee beans, chocolate, woods. Dry and medium bitter finsih. Expected more of ot but it definately lacks body and taste. Far too thin and watery with a minimum of body. Drinkable but wouldn’t buy it again.

Bottle shared with McTapps. Upfront this one is a bit too thin and watery but offering a big touch of chocolate in the nose following some really dark chocholate. Well balanced, medium carbo, thick dark chocolate and roasted malt aftertaste and a slightly bitter finish. Not bad but not really impressing, too.
