Cask; Seasonal - February to May.
Early Bird Spring Hop Ale is brewed with the Early Bird single hop variety - hence the name! This light gold beer is full-bodied, distinctive and refreshing as a spring day, with a malty undertone.

Cask at The Duke of Wellington, Chelsea. It pours clear amber with a decent white head. The aroma is sweet, fruity, dull caramel, bread and malt loaf. The taste is crisp, mellow bitterness, caramel, toasted grain, good fresh fruity character and tangy berry with a dry finish. Light - medium body and fine carbonation. Perfectly pleasant drinking and the best of the Shep Neame’s beers I had on the day.

Cask @Tree Folk’s (Rome). Pours golden with a medium creamy foam. Aroma is fresh fruits, apple, peach, lemon zest, chamomile, some malt, biscuits. Flavour is light sweet at first with a light bitter end, fresh and clean, good. Light body, flat. Nice!

Cask, clear daek amber, small creamy offwhite head. Light caramel aroma. Malty, caramel flavour, hoppy notes. Sweetish. No carb. Not impressive but refreshing.

Cask half pint at the Cask and Glass, London Victoria. Copper colour, moderate white head. Typical Shepherd Neame house character in the aroma, a special combination of malty and fruity. The flavour is fairly dry, some malts with nutty and biscuity notes. A little more of the Early Bird hops would not hurt.

Pint at Westminster Arms, London. Floral hop nose. Copper clear beer. Thin but frothy head. Mouthfeel is thin with clean hop bitterness. There’s a touch of malt then.........long floral hop finish. Insubstantial but refreshing.

Bit of a watery palate, hint of citrus coming through the typically dull earthiness that seems to characterise nearly everything Shepherd Neame do. Boring brown British bitter.

Cask. Copper ale with a decent white head. Biscuity nose. Slightly watery in taste, imparting a slight spice (ginger?) and some sweet malts. All a bit "bleh". Not bad, but not great.

Cask at the Cask & Glass, London, 09/05/13. Clear golden with a thin off white head that clears to the edge and leaves a swirl. Nose is malt, caramel, light orange, sweaty socks, hint of spice. Taste comprises caramel, bread dough, light hop presence, biscuit, touch of sugar. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, some bitterness in the finish. Average - safe bitter ... yawwwwn!
