Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

BB 08/2016 Clear deep amber copper generous white head. Lots of biscuit and bready malt, earthy, floral hops. Moderate bitterness with sweet malt taste. Low fizz though quite lengthy finish, enjoyable traditional English IPA

Amber coloured ale with fast dissipating heaand a lot darker than most I have tried. Forgive me for this as I have the defendant to hand and am trying desperately to imitate some of the smells conjured up by the beer smiths on here. I get and earthy caramel smell with a faint hint of candy. I also get a smell of my sweaty socks that have been discarded on the bedroom floor for three days. And also a smell of must,a definite musty smell surrounded it’s persona. Taste is rather average for an Ipa and I much prefer the Marstons Old Empire bottled offering. In a pub atmosphere I also appreciate the devils backbone on draught. Taste was of malt and caramel and a little on the sweet side for my palate As one reviewer already mentioned this brew bothers me somewhat !

Bottle. It’s an amber beer with a white head. The aroma is citrusy hops and caramel malts. The flavor is citrusy hops with floral and malt notes. Bitter hoppy finish.

Old school IPA. Fairly on the malty side, bit fruity. Sweet finish with only a hint of bitterness.

A welcome back to (historical) basics for me. Much of my very early craft journey consisted of bottled beer from the UK and bottle condition was always a bit hit and miss. This is very good, a relatively strong traditional IPA at 6.1% with plenty of fruit and body. This is no new world hop monster however and the palate provides easy fruit drinking. Some pongy notes late.

(Draught/keg at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm, 15 Jan 2015) Dark amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, citrus and slightly earthy hops. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, citrus and a generous earthy/citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and well made classic English style IPA. Nice one.

Pours a dark amber colour with a substantial white coloured soapy head. The aroma is of malt and the flavour of toffee and malt. There is a moderate bitterness that is medium-lasting on the palate. Overall, a good quality English IPA.

Good English-style IPA ie. malty and earthy rather than hop driven. Copper coloured pour, ample off-white head. Biscuity caramel malts, earthy and floral notes on the nose and tongue. Good dry hop bitterness. Light-medium body and carbonation. Quaffable.
