Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml bottle enjoyed with friends. Pours a copper gold with almost no head that quickly dissipates. Looks flat and unappealing. Aroma is strongly of wood with a little toffee. Slightly cardboardy hops. Taste is a woody carboardy sweetness that’s overpowered by a metallic bitterness. Rough and messy and flat to finish. Metallic aftertaste dominates as well. Bad beer, very disappointing for a highly regarded brewery.

Clear copper colour, white head. Aroma is peaches and biscuits. Medium bitter, grassy taste, malty finish. Pretty dry throughout. Kinda bland and not really pleasant.

Bottled, 500ml from Lidl, Bognor Regis, West Sussex. Amber to copper with no head. Flat beer on the pour, there is a thin, tinny, metallic character to this. There are some fruity notes detected, apricot, peachy with an alcohol note. Just a little poor unfortunately.

Bärnstensfärg, med karamell doft & fin karamell i smaken tillsammans med beskan av humle, utgör den en enkel ren engelsk IPA ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a clear amber with a decent lasting white head. Aroma is more on the malty side with caramel and raisin notes. Flavour is light caramel with a lasting spicy bitterness. Not a bad English IPA but could be better!

Bottle. Clear copper with an off white head. Aroma of Rowntree’s blackcurrant gums, boiled oranges, toffee, grass. Medium bodied, lowish carbonation. Tastes as it smells except for a metallic tinge that bothered me less after a few sips. Pretty bitter at the end. Odd and rather unwelcoming.

Pint bottle. Clear burnished bronze body topped with a thin but lasting white head. Aromas of raisins, biscuits, caramel, hay and orange zest. Taste is heavy on malty sweetness but lifted by and orange zest and spice note. Medium bodied. Long finish with a light fruity aftertaste. Not bad but could do with being dialled up a notch.
