Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml bottle enjoyed with friends. Pours a copper gold with almost no head that quickly dissipates. Looks flat and unappealing. Aroma is strongly of wood with a little toffee. Slightly cardboardy hops. Taste is a woody carboardy sweetness that’s overpowered by a metallic bitterness. Rough and messy and flat to finish. Metallic aftertaste dominates as well. Bad beer, very disappointing for a highly regarded brewery.

Bottle. Short ivory head, some lace, clear amber. Fresh spicy aroma. Caramel, toasty, highly hopped. Crispy, juicy, watery palate. Nice IPA.

500 ml bottle. Pours an amber colour with a white head. Aroma of malts, rich nutty notes and caramel. Flavour of malts, bread, nuttiness, harsh grassy bitterness, mild but unpleasant metallic notes and caramel sweetness. Some mild floral notes. Medium bodied and a dry malty finish. Too English for me.

Amber, thin head. Caramel, citrus, nuts. Medium sweetness, medium-heavy bitterness. Rather one-sided, yet smooth and enjoyable. Not really similar to beers I have grown to known as IPAs, but maybe it’s really closer to the original historic ones, as the brewery claims. Definitely very recognizably English.

A completely clear amber body with minimal off-white head. Nose has spicy and herbal hops accompanied by a strong caramel aroma. Taste starts with a caramelly sweetness followed by a smooth stern bitterness that lingers on the palate. Carbonation is fairly soft and the mouthfeel is on the fuller side. This is a nice simple classic IPA with a good balance of sweetness and hoppy bitterness.

500 ml bottle. (Alko) Tampere, Finland.
Clear copper amber colour with a small foamy off-white head. Floral hops, mild bitterness, woody dryness, nuts and sweetish malt in the aroma. The flavour is pretty much the same. A bit more hoppy bitterness. Very English brew.

0,5l bottle from Alko, Joensuu. Pours clear amber with a medium head. Aroma is malts with some hops and a hint of fruits. Flavor is slightly fruity malts with a very hoppy finish. Pretty much like any other Shepherd Neame, just perhaps a bit more hoppy. Decent.

Bottle from Fenwicks Newcastle. Pours deep amber shade, white head. An intriguing IPA - heavy and unusual chocolate flavours. Quite hoppy - a tasty and interesting beer

Pours bronze clear color with a minimal head. Malty, a bit roasty aroma. Taste is very malty, missing a bit the hoppy flavour. Short lasting, medium bitter finish. Enjoyable malty Ale.
