Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml bottle enjoyed with friends. Pours a copper gold with almost no head that quickly dissipates. Looks flat and unappealing. Aroma is strongly of wood with a little toffee. Slightly cardboardy hops. Taste is a woody carboardy sweetness that’s overpowered by a metallic bitterness. Rough and messy and flat to finish. Metallic aftertaste dominates as well. Bad beer, very disappointing for a highly regarded brewery.

(Draught/keg at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm, 15 Jan 2015) Dark amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, citrus and slightly earthy hops. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, citrus and a generous earthy/citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and well made classic English style IPA. Nice one.

Pours a dark amber colour with a substantial white coloured soapy head. The aroma is of malt and the flavour of toffee and malt. There is a moderate bitterness that is medium-lasting on the palate. Overall, a good quality English IPA.

Good English-style IPA ie. malty and earthy rather than hop driven. Copper coloured pour, ample off-white head. Biscuity caramel malts, earthy and floral notes on the nose and tongue. Good dry hop bitterness. Light-medium body and carbonation. Quaffable.

Copenhagen 11/1 2016. 50 cl bottle from Meny. Very vintage and old fashioned design - like only the English can do it. Pours clear amber with small white head. Disappears fairly fast leaving only small remnants of foam. Aroma is a little fruity with overweight of sour citrus and lemon. Quite fresh. Soft carbonation and a lightly oily palate. Taste has a moderate fruity sweetness which almost drowns in pronounced bitterness. Aftertaste is quite bitter as well followed by a quite dry finish. Old fashioned IPA - beautiful, bitter and bolsterous.

From a 500ml bottle on 8/1/2015. Pours a clear dark golden with a smallish head. has a light caramel aroma with a touch of basement. In the mouth, there’s caramel, toffee and orange. The hops are quite herbal and assertive with the bitterness lingering. Light bodied with average carbonation. Pretty good.

500ml bottle - Appearance: clear, deep copper with a reddish tinge. Off-white head that dissipates slowly. Aroma: biscuit, bready, fruity with a hint of caramel. Taste: medium to high bitterness that lingers, caramel toasty notes from the malt. Slightly sweet. Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, medium body that finished quite dry. Overall: a good example of an English IPA and would recommend it in a heart beat.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours clear copper with strong head and lots of carbonation. Earthy yeast and nuts and chocolatey malts. Bubblegum, more yeast and resiny hops hay. A typical British IPA.

Bottle, 0.50l from Izola Beer Fest 2015. Pours clear orange amber color with thin creamy off-white head and sparkling appearance. Aroma is grassy, floral, mild fruity and caramelly. Taste starts with light sweet but rich maltiness, follows grassy, herbal and fruity with dry mouth feel and bitter finish. Medium body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate.
