Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

50cl bottle from Morrisons. Golden amber with a thin ring of white head; malty aroma with a hint of spice; full and fruity in the mouth with some caramel malt sweetness; and a dry, prickly finish leaving some toffee and mango, and a pleasant warming sensation. The best Shep beer I’ve had in a long while.

Bottle from Fenwicks Newcastle. Pours deep amber shade, white head. An intriguing IPA - heavy and unusual chocolate flavours. Quite hoppy - a tasty and interesting beer

Pours bronze clear color with a minimal head. Malty, a bit roasty aroma. Taste is very malty, missing a bit the hoppy flavour. Short lasting, medium bitter finish. Enjoyable malty Ale.

Amber brown beer with a small beige head. Caramel, sweet bread, ripe fruits on the nose. I bet this is more like a bitter than sn IPA. And it is. Quite bitter but tastes like a combination of a bitter and a red ale. Quite grassy hops with a strong bitterness in the after taste. Sweet caramel too. Quite thin bodied. First sip had some awful metallic and vegetable notes but in the end it’s quite ok.

Bottle in South Shields. Pours clear Amber with a White head. Lots of Malty sweetness surprisingly enough (for Shepherds Neame) counterbalanced by a generous ammount of hops. Crowded hoppy bitterness. I suspect this is quite close to what IPA’s used to taste like. I prefer the modern interpretation but this was nice. It’s also nice to get something remotely interesting out of Shepherds Neame.

Bottle from Tesco Extra, Aylesbury, Bucks, Tuesday 3rd June 2014 Pours rusty orangey colour with a white sticky head. Tangy with a suprisingly harsh and quite hard bitterness, it has a dry finish. This is very bitter and hoppy in fact I am very, very surprised with how interesting this is. A damn good beer, but for those who like their American IPA’s this may prove a little challenging.
