Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Attractive retro label for the current fashion of reviving old recipes - particularly IPA recipes. This is a spanking good beer. The malt is cleaner than one would expect from a retro recipe - but I think Sheps are using their marketing wisdom to simply put a spin on a modern beer. I have no doubt they consulted an old recipe, but they used modern ingredients, modern technology, and modern thinking to adjust the recipe. The malt is clean and toffee flavoured, the hops are brisk and tidy, and the yeast is non-existent. There’s no character here. There’s generous hops and malt, combined in a straight forward traditional manner that has been popular now for over ten years. So this both old fashioned and very modern. And tastes more modern than old fashioned. There’s not much of interest, and there’s certainly no character. But it’s a good, drinkable beer. And there’s nowt wrong with that.

Malty with a sweet and bitter note. Pours clear amber with small, shy head. Quite like it, even though it’s rather down to earth compared to other IPAs.

Pours a failry clear amber color, topped with a medium sized white head, creamy and pretty lasting. Very grassy aroma with some lemony feel to it. SOme dusty maltiness in the back. Mild. Taste is a bit weird. Malty, biscuity and extra herbal. Also a bit boozy, lots of resin. Aftertaste is metallic. Poor.

Poured a crystal clear deep coppery amber colour with a one-finger cream dense foam head that retained very well and laced well. Carbonation high and coarse. Aroma of moderately sweet caramel/sugary malt with a hint of pine; lacks any real hops presence. Taste of moderately sweet caramel/brown sugar malt plus with a very low harsh bitterness as well as being a bit tart. Light body. A bit sweet, slightly dry and with a moderate length low harsh bitterness but with more of a tart than bitter finish. More an English Bitter style.

Bottle. Pours clear chestnut with medium creamy white head. Aroma is malt, grain, hazelnut, fudge and hints of kerosine. Taste is medium to very sweet, light to medium bitter and faint acidic. Body is light oily with soft carbonation. Finish is medium long and mostly sweet with notes of white sugar, caramel, toffee, cream, hazelnut and hints of bitter grapefruit. More English ale than IPA.

Look: Light amber, clear, head is small and not very long lasting. Aroma: Very week aroma. More malty/caramelly notes than hoppy/resinous notes. Taste: Fairly sweet and somewhat malty, not really balanced out by hop bitterness. Not much complexity. Mellow hop bitterness in aftertaste. Palate: Medium body, not too much carbonation, no excess alcohol. Overall not impressive, I won’t buy it again.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2016 At Jim/John is back tasting. Clear orange amber with white head. Sweet grain, bitter tea leaves, orange flavored tea, sugary. Light sweet medium bitter. Very dry, yet sweet. Bitter leaves (tea), reminiscent of the bock style, which I don’t like. Meh.
