Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Attractive retro label for the current fashion of reviving old recipes - particularly IPA recipes. This is a spanking good beer. The malt is cleaner than one would expect from a retro recipe - but I think Sheps are using their marketing wisdom to simply put a spin on a modern beer. I have no doubt they consulted an old recipe, but they used modern ingredients, modern technology, and modern thinking to adjust the recipe. The malt is clean and toffee flavoured, the hops are brisk and tidy, and the yeast is non-existent. There’s no character here. There’s generous hops and malt, combined in a straight forward traditional manner that has been popular now for over ten years. So this both old fashioned and very modern. And tastes more modern than old fashioned. There’s not much of interest, and there’s certainly no character. But it’s a good, drinkable beer. And there’s nowt wrong with that.

Bottle from Morrisons. (£1.50) I'm not a Shep fan. They make horrid beers IMHO. This is surprising, for it's a reasonable effort - not fantastic, but drinkable. Fairly bitter and sharp with a bit of milk. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Boring. A friend who’s into IPA said it’s more bitter than IPA’sin general, I think it’s less bitter. Go figure...

Clear orange, white foam ring remaining. Sweet aroma, sour candy. Does not smell too much as an IPA, but taste is great. Not too overwhelming bitter, just enough. Long lasting bitter aftertaste. (Arnhem 201504)

En meget kedelig IPA. Ikke sammenhæng mellem pris og kvalitet - men en IPA kan dog aldrig ned til.

Drank from a bottle. Quite ok. The hops are a bit too rough. The taste has, in addition to the usual ipa stuff, some smoke, maybe caramel too.

Real pleasant surprise this one looks lively in the glass hippy and well balanced spit on IPA notes of toffee and caramel a great example of an ipa

A bit light on flavour. Ok mouthfeel. Good bright looks. Something bothers me on this one.

Bottle @ De Tolly Joogipood. Pours clear amber with white head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, fruits, bread. Taste is medium sweet with slight bitterness, caramel, malts, some berries. Medium body.oily, medium carbonation. Nothing special.

Bottle (shared with friends). Advertised on the bottle like IPA, does not seem like one. Fruity, spicy & a bit hoppy aroma. Bitter, malty taste.
