3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml dark bottle from Morrisons. Attractive retro label for the current fashion of reviving old recipes - particularly IPA recipes. This is a spanking good beer. The malt is cleaner than one would expect from a retro recipe - but I think Sheps are using their marketing wisdom to simply put a spin on a modern beer. I have no doubt they consulted an old recipe, but they used modern ingredients, modern technology, and modern thinking to adjust the recipe. The malt is clean and toffee flavoured, the hops are brisk and tidy, and the yeast is non-existent. There’s no character here. There’s generous hops and malt, combined in a straight forward traditional manner that has been popular now for over ten years. So this both old fashioned and very modern. And tastes more modern than old fashioned. There’s not much of interest, and there’s certainly no character. But it’s a good, drinkable beer. And there’s nowt wrong with that.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500ml bottle from Tesco (£2.39):
Light malts, some caramel makes itself known soon after along with some earthy malts and English hops with a slightly nutty aroma rounding things off. The beer is quite subdued on the nose & fairly basic.
Caramel amber & a thin, bubbly head that is an off-white colour that turns to a very patchy lacing after a few seconds. Clear with some small bubbles rising to the surface.
Earthy malts and light hops that features some sweetness from a little butterscotch and some caramel too. There is a bitter taste throughout with strong malts & a part fruity, part nutty taste.
Medium to full bodied, smooth & slightly nutty with medium carbonation and a touch of spice on the palate. The alcohol is fairly well hidden and the beer is a bitter one from start to finish.
Traditional tasting beer as you would expect from such an old recipe. Not a bad taste but not that exciting either. It was drinkable but it’s not one I’d pick up again.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
IPA? srsly? nononono.. ohh.. and then I saw style - english strong ale - thats more appropriate. Simple brew, simple drinking beer. Some maltiness, some decent hops (not for IPA), bit fruitiness. Quite dry finish
Mostly sweet with some bitterness in finish. Not bad, but too boring

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled 50cl. Nicely remaining creamy lightly tanned head. Spicy earthy hops. Remarkably leafy with caramel throughout. Medium to full bodied. Good lacework. Balanced. Hints of candied apricot and light orange sneaking in. A chiefly British ESB to my tastes.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Small offwhite head doesn’t last. Clear brown body. Earthy floral
metallic aroma with malty cocos notes. Very little aroma. Dry-sweet
floral caramelly taste with watery notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft
mouthfeel. Dry watery resiny cocos aftertaste with soft caramelly
notes. It’s very low on flavour, and not really all that drinkable,
so overall this is not a winner. No obvious flaws, though. (0.5l
bottle, wine monopoly web order.)

A: Amber, transparent. S: Some mild malt, earthy hops. T: Malts start, some very mild bitterness, ends sweetish with some hops. M: Quite light. O: A very British beer, hops are hard to taste after all the IPA.

Lasting small white head. Good bubbles. Light amber, transparent. Light carbonation. Taste is stale, bitter. Bitterness of an IPA without the aroma. Meh.
