Spoons. Clear amber beer, ghost of a white head. Light palate. Zero carbonation. Dry malt. Thin hops. A little dust. Neutral finish. Dull bordering on offensive. Sheps can make good beer but beers like this just torpedo any attempt to take them seriously!

CasK .. . pours a dark ruby .. . medium head .. lacing is great .. . deep caramel . .. not all that sweet, the bitterness balances it nicely .. . . good brew .. . . it’s better to love a short girl than not a tall.

Cask at the Jolly Farmers, Lewisham. For some reason I’ve got this down as ’Rudolph’s Revenge’, what he was seeking vengeance for I’ve no idea. Anyway, chestnut brown pour with a white head. Malt and toffee aroma. Dates, sweet spice and pepper flavour. Not too bad.

(cask@The jolly farmers, SE London) Dark amber/brown pour with medium off white head, and body is rather thin. Aroma/taste is very malty. caramel, biscuit, nutty dark fruits with a bitter finish. Not bad, kind of average overall.

Golden ale with a mild fruit spiced aroma, but apt for a seasonal winter beer. It has a spicy undercurrent for its flavour and can be classed as a winter warmer.

Cask at the John Russell Fox (JDW), Andover. Reddish amber with a loose cream head that laces the glass nicely; fruity aroma; thin in the mouth with some sour purple fruits and caramel malts; then a thin and dry finish that is less than satisfying. I pity Rudolph, there are far better rewards out there for the taking!

Half-pint, cask at JDWs Angel. Clear amber body, layer at the top. Resin-like aroma. Quite inviting resin and leafy hops in the flavour profile supported by wood and caramel malts. Dry bitter ending. Decent seasonal bitter (London, 25.11.2012).

Deep amber color. Light sweet nose - some caramel and dark fruits. The taste is lightly sweet with a dry, bitter finish. The body’s a bit thin but entirely drinkable. Overall, an acceptable seasonal from the lads at Shepherd Neame.
